Find an Unrefined Ore Sample on a Gravelsnout Digger or Surveyor and bring it to Tatternack Steelforge at Camp Taurajo in the Barrens.

Description

<class>, you have done well in helping me in the past. The warchief is pleased thus far with what I've accomplished, and asks me to continue with renewed determination. My honor dictates that I give you proper recognition to the warchief for all you have done, but first I would ask you for your help again.

Travelers recently came from the south from a place called Thousand Needles. There they killed a kobold who had an unusual ore sample, but they would not sell it. I want a sample of that ore to examine.

Reward

You will receive:
Orcish War Sword
Also, you get: 25

Progress

I saw the travelers again - the ones that would not sell me a sample of the ore. I spit at them for not helping the warchief.

May they die in battle like cowards and not like warriors as should be the right of all people who ally themselves with the Horde.

Completion

A good sample, <name>. A good sample indeed.

Those travelers can no longer lord over me the ore they found, now that you have been successful.

I shall get to work on it immediately. If it proves strong enough, I will send a weapon crafted from the material back to the warchief to show him our success.

This is a horrible quest. I've spent at least half an hour trying to complete it on just about every character I've taken through 1k Needles, and haven't been successful once.

There's only a few of these guys in the whole region, and the drop rate is very low. Just spend the time grinding on wolves while you wait for one of them to spawn over and over.

Gravelsnout Suveyor (30) - Located him at 66,50 and got it off the first drop.
Did this quest as a 26 Warlock.

Got the drop off of a Digger near the Horde encampment on the border with Shimmering Flats. Also, Thundering Boulderkin can be found in this area which are needed for the quest ""A Different Approach."" https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=9431 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=9431

Very annoying quest for the rewards. I advise taking it and while questing through out Thousand Needles chances are high you'll run into enough of these guys to get the item. Which bring me to my next point the drop rate is quite low for NPCs that are pretty hard to find.

If you do need to go searching for them, go to the east of the Great Lift and follow the ridge till you get to the centaurs there about 3 or 4 that spawn frequently between there.

I believe you have to complete https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=893 Weapons of Choice to be offered this quest. At least at level 32 Tatternack Steelforge would only offer me that quest.

Note that it only drops from Gravelsnout Diggers, Gravelsnout Surveyors and the rare spawn Gibblesnik. These are found only in the northen and southern parts of the zone.

(So do NOT try to get it from any of the Gravelsnout Foragers, Gravelsnout Kobolds or Gravelsnout Vermins that roams the central parts of the place as I did before I decided to look it up... That will make for a really bad droprate.) I don't think the mining animation has anything to do with the droprate.

It is definitely not necessary to watch them mine. Saw a Gravelsnout Digger spawn, killed him before he had a chance to mine anything, and got the ore sample. Based on the few times Blizzard has denied superstitions about loot tables elsewhere, I'd bet it doesn't matter when or how you kill them. It's just a crappy drop rate, that's all.

I waited for the mining animation, waited for him to finish mining, and then killed him. Still no ore drop. It seems to be coincidence when it is dropped.

This quest took me forever because I followed the 62.45 cords in The Barrens which is wrong!

This quest has to be done in Thousand Needles. I got the ore sample off of a Gravelsnout Digger around 9.18 (North West for those without cords) which is in the same spot that you can do A Dip in the Moonwell quest. Apparently you can also get it off of a Gravelsnout Surveyor around 11.13 close to where you would do A Different Approach quest as well.

i watched the guy digging and killed him when he was done. for 5 times i had no drop but a couple of wool cloths and some coppers... then i watched the guy dig for 2 times, again killed him when he was done and guess what? it just doesn't drop. this is nonsense, i wonder if it's a bug or something... but i'm not going to give up!

The best way to do this quest (and how ive done it on all my chars) is to not go look for the mob, but to just keep an eye out while doing your other quests in 1k needles. And to even it out a bit, personally i have never had a problem with this quest and i always make sure to have it when i head to 1k needles since its, from my experience, VERY easy XP.

The reward sucks, so if you havent had it dropped by the time you're done in 1k needles, just abandon it. If you haven't had it dropped by then, you probably wont, and it isn't worth the effort.

This quest seems to just be a deadend, it builds up a tiny tiny bit, and then nothing, what of the ore? what was it? was it strong? did Thrall like the weapon? I hate quests that do that, call me silly.

#1 Confirmed quest does suck!
#2 Drop rate is not 100%! Just killed 5 mobs did not drop. If you're wondering I did kill the right mob (Gravelsnout Surveyor).
#3 I spent over two hours and had Thousand Needles completely to myself now that everyone just levels by queing into dungeon finder.

I would like to add that I too believe this is a horrible quest. I've spent over an hour trying to find Surveyors and Diggers, and I found three, none of which had the damn ore. I strongly suggest you ignore this quest and move on with your life.

Waiting for them to dig and then killing them works perfect. Killed one before he dug and got nothing. Waited till the next one finished digging and got it on the second kill.

I killed a Surveyor, nada, then spent almost 20 minutes just to find a Digger, killed him, got the sample
