You get the quest from Mudcrush Durtfeet at 34,38(A bit south of Brackenwall)
You can find a small tribe of the murlocs at 56,22 but there's a much larger bunch on this peninsula at 58,15.

For my level 37 Shaman, the droprate wasn't that bad at all. It wasn't 1:1, but at least one out of every five or six would drop a head.

There's a nice little group of murlocs a smidge Northwest of ""Swamp Eye"" Jarl. They walk around a lot but they're spread out. They also respawn very quickly so you never have to pick off the tethered ones nearest the huts. I didn't notice if the head dropped faster from one kind of murloc than another.

57, 21 Only problem about this place is that you can aggro more than one (2-3) Since they're so close together.

As a Warlock, Im glad I have my Voidwalker to take *most* of the hits, I tank the other 2 while he takes on two. Oh, make sure you use Curse of Recklessness too, these guys run around and aggro the rest of the mobs. =_=

There are no longer murlocs in the area, there are ghosts and such.

To complete this quest go to the beach just over the mountains (straight over) and kill them on the coast and islands.

57,17

The actual coordinates of Mudcrush Durtfeet are [35.1, 38.2] I'm standing in front of him right now. As for the droprate of the Mirefin Heads, I would say it's about 30% but you can check obviously. The Mirefin Murlocs are along the coast, I killed most of mine around [54, 15] I did this quest as a level 35 Warlock, I only died once, thank god for my Soulstone. I actually got level 36 during this quest so I was happy. Hope this helps.

I ground these on the Island approx 57,16 as a 38 Warrior. Taking two at a time was no problem using Demoralizing shout and Thunderclap to debilitate them while throwing the odd Cleave into the mix. However this still took me a while.

I found the drop rate on these to be pretty poor, so you might want to ""zone out"" and do some ""mindless"" grinding for a while, put some good tunes on and the like. Or, if you feel you don't want to do this, then don't there is no follow up.

However the amount of Murlocs you kill trying to get the heads, and adding the reward on top the total Exp you gain from doing this is rather significant.

If you melee, do yourself a favor and use some kind of DoT when they get close to 200 HP, because when these things run in fear, they can easily aggro other mobs on you. And they fear kinda high for how densely they're packed north of Witch Hill.

If you're a Rogue, Rupture works -very- nicely with your standard throw, they don't get too far. Chasing after these guys trying to land an Eviscerate you hadn't placed early enough with that slowing debuff is a pain. Just Rupture around 400-500 and you don't have to worry about it.

Blizzard did some kind of hotfix on the 28th (US) and 29th (EU) that seemingly fixed many of these quests. I tried this quest today after servers came back up, and it did count, increasing my quests from 717 to 718.

I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't done this yet, and still is missing quests for the Loremaster, to do this one now. I'm going to check up on a few RFK quests as well that I've cancelled.

Trust me, you do NOT want to be eaten by an Ogre.

I have absolutely no idea why I thought this would be a fishing quest. Perhaps the mirefin heads reminded me of the raw mithril head trouts you can fish right next to the ogre, or maybe it's the final proof that I should stop replacing sleep with pixels. Either way, to anyone else out there that are as dense as me, the aim of the quest is to kill some murlocs and to bring back their heads. No fishing, just good old head hunting.

Oh, and apparently murlocs are distantly related to chickens, as they both seems to be able to run some distance without actually having any heads x)

The quest is not in any way reserved to alliance only as implied by previous posts. I just finished it with my undead face melter (once I stopped trying fishing for the mirefin heads, that is).

The quest do also count towards the Loremaster of Kalimdor achievement, as previously stated.

- then i started to kill the Mirefin Mwckdweller and Mirefin Coastrunner around the edges . just do round circles of the insland and kill the ones near the water , be prepared to do this about 30mins - 1h depends of your lvl .

This guy is now famous from Blizzcon 2010. A dude in a black tshirt and hat asked if this NPC's story will be developed in Cataclysm where the answer of 'absolutely' was given. So, expect to see more of this guy in the future!

And, to the guy who asked the question at the con, good job! :-) Made me smile...and, surprisingly wasn't the worst question asked during that session!
