The Missing Diplomat

Find Private Hendel in Dustwallow Marsh.

Description

Private Hendel is to the west of here. He's currently on guard duty protecting some of Theramore's infiltrators while they rest. They've been keeping tabs on the Horde base, Brackenwall, and looking for anything else that might threaten our borders.

You should have no problem finding him; just look for the tents along the road.

I have another matter to attend to, but I shall catch up to you soon enough. You can always find me in the Lady Proudmoore's tower if you have any problems.

Completion

Hello, citizen. This is a dangerous place to be wandering about. I wouldn't hang around too long if you value your life.

If you keep your questions short, I'll see if I can help you. Just keep your eyes open for any of those filthy ogres. Rumor has it there's a Horde base somewhere in the swamps. The infiltrators are doing what they can to find it, but the process has been slow going and we've had little progress.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 70 experience (4 20 at max. level)
  • 25 Reputation with Stormwind

This quest is also one of those ""easily soloable even without the proper level requirements"".

What you do is this: (I did this as lvl 36 warrior and didn't even sweat about it, I assume anyone at lvl 28-30 could do it)

Before you accept this quest, pull a swamp mob or two into the guards. They will be very busy. Accept the quest and strafe or back to the nearest tower. If you don't keep hitting Hendel, he will drop you and run back to the camp. When you get close to the tower, the guards there will assist you. When Hendel reaches about 25% health, he will give up and run back to the camp. If the guards there are still aggroed at you, pull them towards the tower as well, let the guards there deal with them.

You will get 6400 XP, a gold and 30 silver, and a nice little ring from the cute miss Proudmoore upon completion. Nice, for a few minutes of work, huh?

The way I did it, which was on accident really was like this. I tried pulling mobs in to distract the guards, which worked, but I'm only a level 29 priest, so I couldn't kill Hendel and the guards still aggroed to me after they killed the raptor I dragged in. So when I ran away and they dropped from me, I went back to try again, only the 2 guards were now friendly to me. I couldn't attack Hendel myself, but they both turned on him and kicked his ass. I still received credit for completion.

I didnt even bother dragging a mob over before accepting the quest. Just accept, tag him and get over to where the guards are at the tower. Then just keep killing until your finished. The guards at the tower will help you fight :-D.

As a Draenei Shaman, I found a nice trick is to drop a Stoneclaw totem to slow him down a bit, I also accepted it in GhostWolf form, so I can stay ahead, pulling the lot of 'em to the tower, and let the guards handle the rest. I started this quest line at level 31, and did it with no major difficulties, and did about 33% of my level 31 experience all in about 2 hours. Not bad at all.

No need to drag him anywhere.

Pull a random mob into Hendel's camp and the guards will defend you. When said mob gets to around 15% health accept the quest to subdue Hendel. The guards will stay in defend-the-quester mode and they'll kill him for you. I've used this method on probably 8 different toons.

The exploit is fixed as of 02/14/08.
As long as his guards are in combat, Hendel will always be friendly, and you will not be able to accept his quest.
He is also put in friendly/passive mode if one of his guards takes any other target than a player while the quest is already running.

Ok rogues have it easy on this part of the quest. Drag an elemental over to the guards then accept the quest. Vanish. Private Hendel will glitch and be ""aggressive"" but you cant attack him. When the guards are done with the elemental the guards will attack Hendel and then you deal with the guards that remain, should be one guard at around 1/4 health. Hope this helps. Completed at 29.

Note: Kiting Hendel to the friendly guards at the tower will cause him to run back to camp when his health gets low, and you will fail the quest if you die after that. So make sure that you chase Hendel as soon as he starts running back, 'cause that means that Jaina and her crew are about to appear at his camp. The two guards that aggro'd you should either disappear after you chase Hendel, or continue to fight the friendly guards that were helping you. If you are there when Hendel gets back to his camp, then Jaina will cast a spell on him and this will complete the quest.

- If you drag mobs to Hendel's guards and get them to die before accepting the quest, then you can defeat Hendel, but the quest won't complete and the guards will eventually respawn and immediately aggro you. Once again, if you die at this point, then the quest will fail because Jaina won't show up until Hendel's two guards have also been defeated... either by you or by the friendly guards at the tower. Letting the swamp mobs kill the two guards will not result in a completed quest even if you defeat Hendel afterward, they must be killed by you or the guards at the tower.

As a Level 34 Druid, I originally had trouble with this level 38 quest. If you're going to try to solo this without the help of the friendly guards or swamp mobs, then wait til you're higher.

*** Edit: If you are healing class and you kite mobs over to kill Hendel's guards - make sure that you don't have the defeated Hendel selected... 'cause even though he will return to Friendly mode after defeat, his guards will respawn and attack. If you try to heal yourself, you may end up healing Hendel instead. This n00b move 'caused me a couple of deaths and a great deal of frustration... hence the 4 edits to this post -_- ***

Ok, well it looks like none of those tactics will work as of this build.. The elementals would not engage Hendels guards, they turned back at the road. I got Hendel and his guards up to the Guard Tower, but they turned back before engaging the guards from the tower, as well.. I tried several times. I guess I will have to get my druid up to the correct lvl before trying again. She is currently lvl 34.

Just did this fight. first time only had 2 guards and they ran back. a couple mins later so did he. he bugged out and had to abandon the quest. a few mins later he popped and so did 2 more guards!

2nd try: pulled a mob, aggroed the guards, was able to start quest. when the mob died the guards came to help me.

soloed 29 warrior

Solo'd as a 28 Rogue.

All I did was pull an elemental mob to distract the guards. I then started the fight, popped evasion, pulled him to the tower. His two guards ran back and attacked him along with a few guards from the tower.

Once he got low on hp, he and his guards ran back to the spot he spawns at. Just then, the Archmage and Jaina appeared and the quest was completed. Very easy.

This quest is bugged to heck. When I got there, there were no npc's in combat and another player had been waiting there for a while and still couldn't access it. Went away came back and died almost instantly with a lvl 33 druid. When a rebirthed I couldn't chat to him again.

The co-ordinates are correct, he stands on the jetty. I'll be coming back once I've got some more power to my spells.

Simply kill the GUARDS before Private Hendel and the quest will complete. Do not kite the mobs, as the quest will bug, you will have to abandon, and wait 5-10 minutes for Private Hendel to respawn.

I believe Blizzard added this so that characters below the level it was meant to be completed at, cannot. Kiting will make the quest fail, and therefore, waste your time. I learned this the hard way, failing twice before finally figuring it out.

I hope this helps anyone who was having a difficult time completing this quest.

The rewards are extremely nice (2900 exp first turn in, 5850 exp for the second, and a pretty good ring for Feral Druids. Paladins, and Warriors.

Enjoy, and happy hunting.

Regards,
Qor (Level 34 Nightelf Druid of Azuremyst)

As a lvl 30 warlock this quest was extremely easy! I pulled a mob and brought it to Hendel to make his two guards attack it. The mob completely occupied the two guards until I got Hendel to surrender himself.
I used my voidwalker to tank Hendel, which didn't seem to do that much damage. My voidwalker didn't even lose half his health.

Can all of the irrelevant comments (ie. most of the comments above) be removed? This quest is ""FIND"" private Hendel and has nothing to do with fighting him.

If you want to offer tips about how to beat him, click on the next quest in this chain, and post there.

ManofSword;

Abandon the quest and repick it up and kill the guards, and then the quest should be turned in. Take a health pot or two with you.

Vaad;

As soon as you turn in the quest it turns into this event, which is why it is explained on here, instead of on the next page, to keep people who have only done the quest once from dying and having to redo the quest.

I am wearing a chest item called Green Whelp Armor which put the guards to sleep for 10 seconds when they hit me so I was able to attack Hendel without interference. It was real easy without the guards to worry about. This chest item has saved me many times.
