Description

For years I have sought a certain gem. It is called the Heart of the Mountain and it's the size of your fist! The Dark Iron dwarves have it locked in their vault and, try as I may, they won't let me purchase it.

So I must resort to force.

Fight your way to the Lower Vault of Blackrock Depths, breach its secret safe and gain the Heart. To do that, you must defeat Watchman Doomgrip, and he won't appear until you've opened every relic coffer in the vault!

The Heart of the Mountain is completely unrelated to the Dark Coffer (described above), but their proximity causes much confusion. Both are located in the vault in Blackrock Depths and both involve a summoned boss event to open.

To access the Heart of the Mountain (located behind a secret panel below the Dark Coffer), you must open all the normal Coffers (opening each one consumes a Relic Coffer Key) and fight five elites: A dwarf (Watchman Doomgrip, https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=9476 https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=9476) and the four golems. These mobs will spawn immediately after opening the final Coffer, so be prepared for the event to take place, and make sure your group is aware what will happen.

It is possible to find out which dark keeper has spawned. In the room before the room in which Watchman Doomgrim spawns there should be a portrait on the wall. (you will have to open its covering to view who it is). This is also stated on the page that Celem linked above.

Wait, so let me get this straight... You want us to spend hours hacking our way to the bottom of this dungeon, defeat a huge guardian, lug this GEM the size of my fist all the way out of that dungeon and hand it over to you in exchange for 85 silver?

I feel like I just woke up alone in a public bathroom with my cheek on a urinal cake after spending the night with someone who promised me the world on a silver platter...

This is quest draws from Tolkiens 'The Hobbit'. The 'Heart of the Mountain' is the Arkenstone of Thrain, guarded by Smaug the Dragon.

Such a big, clear gem, a one of a kind, hidden in a deep locked vault. It's treasured even by the dark iron dwarves, who are master miners.

And Maxwort uberglint only pays you 85 silver?

This quest DOES count for Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms.

Also, had an interesting incident happen when I did the quest: I was able to loot the Heart of the Mountain through the wall of the secret panel. I didn't need to open any relic coffers or kill Doomgrip.

EDIT: Several people have confirmed this, so I think I can safely say that it is possible to loot the quest item without collecting any keys. Just head right on down and pick up your Heart.

I was about to loot the Heart of the Mountain behind the Dark Coffer without opening any Relic Coffer Doors.
Stand so close to the Dark Coffer that your character is touching the wall, then you will be able to turn your camera to an angle that lets you right click to loot Heart of the Mountain. You won't be able to see it, so move your mouse around until the wheel comes up to loot it. Make sure the Relic Coffer Doors on each side are shut. I posted this comment immediately after doing so on 2/18/2010 during patch 3.3.2.

The quest isn't obsolete, I just did it a little while ago. The quest giver is now located just inside the instance along with the others. It's the same NPC who gives it though.

Quest awards 3 gold, 33 silver now, in addition to the xp. The glitch still works, as well.

Confirmed that you can loot the jewel without opening any of the locked doors. Just move cursor to the bottom right of the door and the cogwheel will appear, allowing you to loot it. Quest completed :)

Glitch does not work as of 4.3

Had multiple people try, was able to target the heart. Kept getting the error message Target not in line of site

As of patch 5.1, you can still complete this quest. However, it's given and returned to one of the questgivers inside the instance. The Dark Coffer Key seems to have a reduced drop rate as we cleared the entire instance and found only two or three extra keys. You have to open each of the coffers in the area and then an elite will spawn in addition to the animation of the four stone golem elites. After killing all of them the drawer opens and falls to the ground making The Heart of the Mountain and a small box (usually holds one green) lootable. The quest item disappears after collected with a short respawn timer, so everyone is able to get it in one run.

I'm not certain whether the clicking behind the drawer glitch still works as someone opened a couple coffers before I could check.

This quest is not obsolete. You just have to collect the keys and open all of the safes. The heart will spawn under the middle safe after u open all of the others.
