Elven Gem (10)
Goggles of Gem Hunting
Provided Item:
Goggles of Gem Hunting

Description

The treasure has been on the sea floor so long that the gems have calcified into thick stone. But the power harnessed in these goggles will allow you to locate them easily.

A little gnomish ingenuity goes a long way!

So borrow the Goggles of Gem Hunting, <name>, and see if you can collect some of the lost treasure for Captain O'Breen.

I'd swim down there myself but...um...well, I have important scientific business to tend to up on the safe, dry land....er, yeah.

Reward

You can choose one of these awards:
Gnomish Zapper
Servomechanic Sledgehammer

Progress

How did the goggles work? Did everything function properly? Adjustments can be made if necessary.

Oh, and I'll need those goggles back when you're done. I am sure Captain O'Breen will have many uses for them later on.

Completion

Most superb, <name>! The Captain will be very pleased! And just wait until word gets back to Fleetmaster Seahorn!

Use the goggles provided by the quest giver and search throughout the Drowned Reef.

The gems will appear as golden dots like other tracked items.

See https://vanillawowdb.com/?object=2712 https://vanillawowdb.com/?object=2712 for the dots at WoWHead.

I just did this one, and was glad for my https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=20557"">(Item #20557). I ate treats until I got spell=24926"">Yeargh... for its swim speed buff, then drank an https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=5996"">(Item #5996). After that it just became another collection quest. The naga ran interference, but I needed to kill them for https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=664"">(Quest #664) anyway. The twenty minutes for the pumpkin treat buff was just enough for me to complete this quest, Drowned Sorrows, as well as https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=662"">(Quest #662)Deep Sea Salvage. Obviously this isn't an option during the rest of the year, but if you happen to be ready for this quest during the holiday, take advantage of it.

Difficult water w/o a breathing pot or buff.

Typically when you arrive at the gems your breath meter is 1/2 gone.Collecting more then 1 gem in a single straight dive is nearly impossible.

In the event you do drown you have a long run back. Give yourself some time and don't be greedy.

For some reason, the one under the turtle shell kept respawning, so I sat there with my druid in water form and got 8 out of 10 that way.

For water breathing you can use an elixir, a buff (warloc/shaman, or a friend who is warlock/shaman), or a Deepdive Helmet (engineering 230), or a Hydrocane (get from Gnomeregan)

needless to say, long and boring quest, specially if you are working on your Loremaster achievement and can't waste your time getting well prepared for every single quest you have to do

Even with the new long breath bar, this is a pain to do. Best use the goggles at all times until you finish, unless you have serious problems with the naga for some reason. It can be hard to find the gems (which don't really look like gems) without them.

I found this quest on the list of quests that give rep with The Scryers Faction. While I found it somewhat strange, I decided to give it a shot. I can confirm that it does NOT give Scryer Rep for anyone who is Friendly with the Scryers.

USE THE GOGGLES

I can't say this more clearly.
I spent about 20 minutes swimming around, searching for the items, when I thougt ""Maybe I should look it up at wowhead""

Needless to say, I did not use the goggles and I am once again thankful for wowhead to show me my dumbness.

Note for priests - the goggles given to you for the quest work above water too. So if you're like me, and sometimes cast levitate in order to save yourself time (running on top of water is faster than swimming), the goggles DO work above water as well. Also I found it useful to cast levitate when I needed to eat or drink to regain mana.

This quest now (post Shattering) gives you a swim speed/underwater breathing buff that lasts for 30 minutes.

However, be careful you don't stray too far in the ocean because if you go into a different zone (like I did going after some stranglekelp), you will LOSE the buff and the NPC's will not grant it to you again unless you abandon the quest and re-accept it.

Wowhead says that this is obsolete, but I obtained and completed this quest today. As someone already mentioned, there is a swimming/breathing buff and it is very helpful.

Notes on completing the quest itself:

1) Wear the goggles
2) Swim to the correct area of the map (there aren't any Elven gems in the area near the boat, you have to swim out a good bit)
3) Swim around killing things and waiting for yellow dots to appear on your minimap and then collect them. The Elven gems are difficult to see on the sea floor: it is much easier to rely on the map.
