Attack on the Tower

Find Trelane's Phylactery, Trelane's Orb, and Trelane's Ember Agate, and return them to Skuerto at Refuge Pointe.
Trelane's Phylactery
Trelane's Orb
Trelane's Ember Agate

Description

Here's what your lookin' for: Trelane's phylactery, Trelane's orb, an' Trelane's ember agate.

All three should be in chests within the tower an' you shouldn't have a problem opening the chests on your own; you just have to be careful of the ogres.

The tower's defenses won't take care of 'em on their own; you'll need to have your weapons at the ready. Those ogres find out you're there and stealing from 'em, an' they'll be sure to put the hurt on you.

Be careful, an' good luck.

Progress

You do this, an' I'm sure Malin'll be more than pleased with you.

Completion

Malin couldn't've asked a worthier person to come here an' aid us, <name>. You've done a grand job!

He'll be pleased to see what an overwhelming success our mission's been.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 300 experience (18 at max. level)
  • 250 Reputation with Ironforge

As you work your way up the tower that will be a box on each level. After opening a box and taking the object out several mobs will spawn (3 for the first, 4 for the next, and 5 for the last).

I was able to solo this as a level 41 Druid, just stealth to the boxes and wait for the ogres to path away (at some of the boxes there are ogre paths), unstealth and wait for it to cooldown then shift into caster form grab the box and shift back into cat form and restealth (you don't get flagged for combat right away).

I tried the repetitive dieing approach. It worked even better than above. I bubbled standing on a raised section just diagonally across from the tower with divine shield (10s) and ran into the tower. I didn't see the first crate and ended up running past it up to the 2nd floor. At that point all the mob chasing me had given up. I accidentally aggro'd the ogre that is very near the 2nd crate (I could've avoided that if I'd been thinking faster) but by healing I was able to dispatch him without too much difficulty. Then I opened the crate and immediately ran up to the top floor. I lost all the newly spawned mob by doing that so I could immediately open the 3rd crate. At that point I tried to lose them by dropping all the way down the tower. I'm not sure how many lost but I think I still had several one me at the bottom of the tower. I didn't really try very hard to stay alive but I doubt I would have managed it if I had. So as a ghost I ran back in, found the crate I'd missed (took a bit of looking). Respawned by it, opened it immediately and then immediately ran out of the tower and bubbled as I left. That let me escape all the way to the alliance section with only the final ogre right by that section still aggroing me. Since I had plenty of mana I healed myself and killed him off (without any help from those lazy alliance soldiers I might add - they ignored the hulking great ogre in the middle of their camp!).

So one death and only 2 ogre kills (ignoring the several I killed to get near the tower) to quickly get all the items as a lvl 44 palladin is a resounding success.

Well I solo'd this with a 42 mage. I found theres a way to get to the tower with out any trouble. Theres a ledge that you can jump on right where you ""enter"" the general area where the troll berserker's are. I zerged it, ice barrier'd and frost nova'd and died 4 times but it worked. I never used the defenses because i didn't know how or where to use it &gt;_&lt;

For anyone who wants them the coords for the boxes are:
Box #1 - 18.2, 68.1 - it is off the walk way on a platform next to the wall.

Box#2 - 18.0, 67.9 - this one is next to the wall also

Box#3 - 18.2, 69.2 - again next to the wall

The boxes are very small and do not look like chests at all. When I died I just went to the next box and rez-ed at it. As a druid, at level 42, it was easy enough for me to solo; when you pop to elf form return back to cat and stealth as quickly as you can.

just a little sidenote: as you go down the ramp by the trolls entering the part with the ogres, there is a little post on the right hand sid with a kind of straw X on it, if you jump onto the ledge right by there you can cruise all the way round to the tower without the hassle of killing all the ogres on the way to it...

saves looooads of time =)

Update after patch 2.3. After opening each box, it seems like it'll spawn 2 ogres only. The duo always seems to be a Mauler and a shaman. Shaman always drops a fire totem.

As a rogue, have auto loot on and just stealth right after you loot. I avoided all the spawns this way.

also new in patch 2.3: the mobs are no longer elite, but there has been added several mobs on the slope up to the tower - there's now 5 where there used to be 2, so making the quest a little tricky still, but it's all in all easier, just completed it as 38 shadow priest..

DO NOT activate the tower defenses, it will only make the quest more difficult.

If you ignore the tower defense pedestal you will only have to fight at most two ogres at the same time as you make your way up the tower and there will be no need to corpse run.

If you want to get to the tower without having to fight the ogres, then look for the high ledge on your left as you pass under the huge archway leading to the ogre infested area. If you jump up on it you can hug the keep wall until you reach the tower without catching any aggro. This ledge will meet with the back side of the tower and form a sharp crease which you can use to get back up on the ledge again and shake any aggro if you decide to make a run out of the tower.

(If you decide to activate the tower defenses, you will attract up to six ogres at once inside the tower even with the protective elementals spawned to help you. Brilliant work by the Blizzard quest design team.)

I think this will show people reading this how easy the game has become, i completed this on a lvl 38 priest, I died once, which was on purpose to save me time (getting out wihtout killing lots of mobs). I am new to the game so its not my experience that allowed me to complete it, I used the gap in the wall which has been described above, I then ran round the inside of the wall till i was at the tower, dropped down and killed a ogre, then killed the 2 guard ogres, and I was in. I also missed the first box, i killed the mobs that spawn when u open the 2nd box however just jumped from the top when I opened the 3rd, saving me time from having to fight. to get out I used shield and ran out and then back on my self till i was as close to external wall as possible, then let ogres kill me. I ran back as a ghost but stayed on the outside of the wall and res'ed. This took me less than 10 mins to complete.

I did search for a rusted key on the many sites &amp; a jailor named Borhuin in Alterac Mtns is suppose to drop a rusted iron key 40% of the time, whether this is the key I don't know. I went over to where he was &amp; killed him at lease 5-7 times w/no drop key. Gave up.I spent the better part of an hour killing him and waiting for respawns before I realized why he drops the key half the time. That key is for a horde quest, to free the orc in the top back room of the inn. I suspect the jailer will never drop the key for anyone not on the quest (which means all alliance). And ""Attack on the Tower"" is alliance only. So, for now I'm going with ""the quest is currently broken"". Really wish I'd known this before wasting several hours on it.

*Edit: apparently there are a half dozen or so threads about it on the wow forums, all of them ending with a blue saying ""this is a known issue, thanks"" and locking the thread. So, yes, it is confirmed broken.

I red the comments above about the ledge that leads near the tower as an easier way in and out, saw that ledge, but seemed to high to jump on it. Is there anything I am missing?

And a hint (I don't think it has been mentioned here). Whenever you open a chest, the two ogres spawn on the sides, far away from each other (approx 90 degrees left and right from the chest). So for non-stealth classes the best is to rush sideways (either way) immediately after opening the chest, this way chances are you only have to fight one ogre at a time. Staying near the chest maxes the risk to aggro both ogres depending on your level.

The tower in question is inside Stromgarde up the ramp, where you found the shaman for Trelane's Defenses. I would NOT suggest activating the crystals defenses as 6 ogres appear and will pwn you if you cant handle them. Regardless of if you USE the crystal or not you will still complete the quest if you gather all of the items which are on each tier. Two ogres will spawn a few seconds after each box has been looted. This was a simple quest which i soloed as a lvl 38 ret pally.

Note- There is also an opening in the wall of the keep near the rear, you can get to it from either side but going clockwise you have more ledge to work with if you dont want the extra xp and such.

Piece of cake!

As a level 37 rogue, just stealth in past the ogres (into the keep's main gates, hang a right, hang a left...you'll see ogres), maybe sap one or two just for grins and ease of passage. Go to the tower, activate the defenses, stealth to each level's chest, auto-loot when opening, stealth immediately. You're done! That's it! Never fought even one ogre!

I did get lucky by the pedestal to activate the defenses...somone had killed the two top-most ogres near it, but it still wouldn't have been a big issue.

Don't worry about all the ledge crawling reported in other posts if you're a rogue.

Cheers!

Do NOT activate the tower defenses. They are a total red herring. You will have to deal with three times as many mobs, and the ""defense"" water elementals attract absolutely no aggro and only last about 15 seconds before they die and every mob within 200 yards trains itself right onto you.

This really is a terrible, terrible quest. I can't even imagine what the quest design team was thinking when they wrote it.

Its worth to note that while the mobs outside the tower are lvl40 the ones that spawn inside are 38-39.

And while the mobs at the first crate instantly aggro you the ones at the other 2 crates dont, they just start patrolling the floor.
Just work your way up the tower and ignore the quest mechanic thingy entirely.

Finally used this item to clear out bank space.
Using it on the pedestal to the right of the tower stairs spawned two level 38 Summoned Guardian water elementals (""the tower's defenses"") on the hill to the tower, along with 4-5 ogres. Another 3 or so elementals spawned inside and engaged the ogres there. I don't think activating the defenses spawns more ogres inside.

Here is a little tip on how to do the quest and save a ton of time.

Right as you get to the ogres (the slope) to the right is a little ledge sort of a balcony, and with your mount you can jump on it and just ride along the edge of where the ogres are, and you wont agro a single one of them since youll be on top of the area of the ogres, go ride to the right to the north side of the tower and jump down, do whatever the quests asks you to do and jump back on the slope thats the closest to the edge and do the same thing.

Saved me a ton of time hope i could explain myself. =)
