Description

As an apprentice to Feranor Steeltoe, I learned his special technique for imbuing weapons with fiery enchantments. Last I heard of him, he was working at a smithy with a hunting party up in Lordaeron.

I can't tell you too many of the details about the process, but I can tell you it requires blood from a rare, still-beating black drake whelp's heart. I don't have much to do waiting for word from Ironforge. If you bring me a heart from the whelps in Lethlor Ravine, I'll show you my skill!

There is a valley of whelps you can farm for this quest drop. The drop rate is pretty low so it can take a while if you don't get lucky early on. Valley entrance is around 68,52 and the mobs are non elite 41-43. Only reason it's marked as elite is because there are elite dragons nearby but you don't need to encounter them for this quest.

This item should not be mistaken for Firey enchantment.

I've also heard that this one is bad for instances, since it procs a AoE attack, that will hit sheeped/trapped targets, and will break them.

It took me 3 attempts to do this. I literally killed at least 50 of the 41-43 and about 20 of the elites...I did get a dark whelpling drop though. If you are a skinner/leatherworker it is worth your time..tons of thick leather. just be patient or lucky. very easy to solo as a 47 hunter.

As a side-note related to lore, Feranor Steeltoe is the dwarf guy in the second mission of the human campaign in Reign of Chaos.
He asks Arthas to kill a black dragon, Searinox, and gives him a fire orb, which acts a little like the reward of this quest.

I never did this when i was leveling up. I was helping a guildie the other night get it. Being a lvl 70 pally i could walk backwards in a big circle aggroing all of them while spamming concencration. Needless to say it took 63 kills, which takes a while since only about 10 dragons (elites will follow you, whelps shoot and take too much effort to AoE in mass numbers) spawn at a time..... one of those drops that everyone can loot from just one mob tho, so get a group!

Count me as another one that is so frustrated I could just spit. I grinded on whelps and elites for TWO HOURS and got nothing but forked tongues to show for it.

I might try again later since the elites weren't too bad exp for a 48 warrior...but if I don't get it quickly this will be abandoned faster than you can say ""Horrible Drop Rate.""

Killed at least 15 elites and at least 75 whelps, then I got frustrated, took a little break, killed a few more, still didn't drop, I was about to give up but then I prayed the next one would drop it, and it did =D. Horrible droprate definitely not worth it unless you honestly don't have anything better to do, or if you need to level skinning. Good luck ppl.

if you farming qs for factions rep, dont bother. This q is a waste of time, the drop rate is totaly retarted. Its usefull only to low lvls who combine it with exp from mobs.

Oh my god i had nightmares about the droprate on that heart there are only 2 times when i grinded 2 levels from mobs only one when i was level 37 and i was doing my armorsmith q (in wich i ^&amp;*!ed blood to gather all the ores etc.) and the second when i farmed for 4 hours the drakes for this enchant to put it on my weapon it was absolutely awfull(the enchant is good btw almost worth the time farming:p)

Whelps - me 120-0

I grinded for about an hour before I gave up. Never ever doing that quest again. And I can't stress this enough: If you've started doing this quest and don't want to give up cause you spent time here for nothing if you do - suck it up, swallow your pride and move on. You'll feel a lot better when you get out of that hellhole.

Going to have to agree with most of the comments here. This is one of the worst droprates I have run across in the game. Over 100 whelps and over 50 elites....no drop. Do not ever bother doing this quest. Hopefully if no one does it, blizzard will either fix the drop rate, or better yet, remove the person responsible for it from ever designing another quest

I was wondering what the droprate was after clearing the entire valley, read the comments, sighed, decided to do it some other time, and then the first mob dropped the heart. Yay. :D

47lvl lock - about 100 whelps, about 35 elites...and nothing. This is BORING. That's the antithesis of what a video game is supposed to be.

Don't bother slapping this on an Alliance/Horde/Argent lance.
It doesn't show.

I ground for a good 2 hours for this enchant, slapped it onto my lance
hoping mine would have a neat glow when I used is, but it was all in vain.
To make it worse, Blizzard made it that you can't keep the item afterwards
in a quick ninja fix.

Better off slapping this onto your mining pick, skinning knife, arclight spanner, or any other
goofy profession/vanity items.

Unfortunately, this doesn't give your weapon any sort of cool glow or other visual enhancement. Sort of a bummer considering how much work goes into grinding for the quest item.

Three things I recommend about this quest
1. Start it at level 42, you'll probably be 45 before you complete it.
2. Have skinning as one of your professions
3. Be sure your bags are empty so you can hold all the hides you'll end up with
