Yes, you need enough fishing skill to be able to fish in STV waters. I believe that's somewhere around 150~ fishing, but the more you have, the easier it is to catch the fish.

One of the best places to fish is Yojamba island.

Set your Hearthstone to Booty Bay and go to Yojamba. Around the entire island there are about 8-10 pools and in all my weeks fishing, no one ever goes there.

I've already won the competition twice and multiple times I've already got 40 fish before anyone else has.

I won the contest yesterday in arround 17minutes... I just started moving from the bridge near Booty Bay @ pretty boy duncan upwards to the North.

I usualy found a new pool within 50-100 yards. 1 time I had to bridge 250ish yards I think but there wasn't really alot of competition. At least not from Horde side since like 10 Alliance were ganking everything on sight :>.

1 note tho. Having a scout riding ahead looking for the next pool is always handy.

Just won this contest as I'm preparing achievements for WotLK, here are some tips that might come in handy

1. Put your Hearthstone in Booty bay
2. Be in Stranglethorn Vale 15 minutes before the event starts so you can find a nice and deserted spot
3. Have https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=43308 Find Fish tought by https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=34109 Weather-Beaten Journal
4. A friend to kill people of the opposing faction/jump in pools of your own faction (If you're really THAT desperate)
5. Kill processes in your Operating System's task manager, after you HS you don't want to be beaten by someone while you're still on the loading screen of the inn ^___^
6. Keybind your fishing skill, so you can instantly recast after you've looted(SHIFT+click looting that is)
7. Bring a https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=32863 Skybreaker Whip/ https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=25653 Riding Crop or a personal Paladin escort:-) to speed up travel time in between pools

On a sidenote, I gave Yojomba Island a try but I went somewhere else quite fast as there isn't a pool up 100% of the time which makes it quite in-efficient.

Good luck and happy fishing!

Has anyone else noticed that since achievements, this tournament has gotten increasingly more violent and chaotic? I won the contest twice loooong before achievements even came out, but ever since they did, it's gotten worse and worse. A friend of mine is trying to win it as it is the last achievement he needs for his salty title. I thought it was bad pre-wotlk, these days it is not uncommon to have ENTIRE GUILDS run along the coast, slaughtering the opposing faction and greifing their own.

Achievements, are SERIOUS BUSINESS

PS: Stumbled across this, apparently achievements are such serious business, that people are willing to http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16019853371&sid=1 pay $40 to get them...

I am proof that this takes neither experience or skill, as I just won on my second attempt. (This isn't a brag, just some tips for beginners.)

Before I started my first try I scoured Wowhead for any information I could find.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the pool spawning areas. You can do this by searching ""Tastyfish"" here on Wowhead. Make note of the dots and choose an area you want to fish.
  • If you have a multi-button mouse, utilize it! Set your ""Cast"" ability to one button and any flying mount to another. This makes for seamless transition between pools once you memorize the buttons.
  • BE PREPARED! I can not stress this enough. Many people forget to set their hearth to Booty Bay and this can cost them the win, because more likely than not there will ALWAYS be someone hot on your heels when you are turning in this quest. Also, show up at your preferred fishing spot about 10 minutes before the contest starts so you can prepare yourself mentally. Another good tactic to use is to set your loot to auto loot. Believe it or not, this will shave very valuable time off for you.
  • Don't freak out. You will inevitably become more and more nervous as you get closer and closer to 40 fish. Keep your hand steady and your mind sharp, once you hit 40 you will need to react very fast to hit your hearth button. And if someone wins before you, don't make a big deal out of it. There is always next week.
Also, here are some answers to questions I had to search around for myself that you might find useful.
  • The guy you turn this in to will be in front of the inn when the contest is about to start. Make sure you familiarize yourself with his location and be ready to bolt straight to him after you load in!
  • The pools take a few seconds to start spawning. First, all pools will disappear. Shortly after that, they will be replaced with pools of tastyfish. The distance between each pool varies, but in my limited experience I find they are somewhat spread out from each other.
  • He will yell two times. Once when the contest has started and again when someone wins. AGAIN, do not send nasty whispers to the winner. They are people just like you who are trying for this achievement.
  • One problem you will definitely encounter is the bobber not landing directly in the pool. Do not freak out, when I won I had probably spent a solid two minutes merely trying to wrestle some stubborn pools. There is no way around this, but you should try to learn to be able to judge a good distance to be from a pool so that you can try to avoid this problem.
I hope this helps someone else out there! This is everything you need to know to win the contest. GOOD LUCK! :)

This is totally luck-based! While there are some overriding things to help you win, they're not guaranteed. I tried to do this for weeks on one character and never made it, then I try it for the second time on my current character and I got it.

If you start in an area that doesn't have many schools spawning, you're going to end up wasting time flying around to find some. When you cast, your bobber can go everywhere but where you want it to go even if you think you're standing in the perfect spot. When you do get it in the school you can fish up all sorts of junk you don't need, like other fish or stranglekelp.

I didn't have my hearth set to Booty Bay (just 310% speed flying from around Grom Gol) but I managed to get it. The whole process took me approximately 16 minutes to get all 40 fish, and there were around 7 other 85s of my faction fishing, plus numerous lowbies.

I do agree that you need to prepare yourself, and when you get the 40 fish try not to get too excited, since it can negatively impact your turn-in or spoil you getting to BB in time. My heart was beating out of my chest when I turned in and didn't realize I needed to choose a reward, I just kept clicking ""complete quest"" out of blind excitement.

Some easy tricks to help: you can use the guild perk Have Group, Will Travel in combination with a guildie to get you an insta-port directly in front of the turn in guy. It doesn't even have technically have to be a guildie. As long as the other person has the perk, you can be summoned by anyone in your party. You can also use referafriend to do the same thing.

I also found it useful to have Gathermate2 addon, because it tells me where they spawn at, which helps to tell you where to look. You can also scout out the pools even after the derby is won, marking them for your next attempt or an alt's attempt.

I also mistakenly believed that you could only find the tastyfishy on the cape, but they are also along the western coast of Northern Stranglethorn Vale. I didn't check the eastern coast, so I don't know about that side.

Wild shore was amazing. I was standing at the west end and startet fishing pools.
The was spwaning new pools close and i never had to fly to a new spot.

I even messed up real time cause i HS'ed at 30 fish (for some odd reason i thougth i was 30 fish.) i had to fly back at fish 10 more and then fly back and i won.
(2 sec after there came out 2 hordes whit nitro boots on, and got /w from a ally that he was only 5 sec behind me)

Try out wild shore next time. Just stand at the very end.(under the ""W"" on the map) there was 2 pools there that where respwaning all the time.

The southern tip of STV (Wild Shore) and halfway up the coast to the east were amazing fishing spots, even though I was sharing them with several other players. I managed to get all my fish by the 17 minute mark and got it turned in by the 18 minute mark. Next closest player was about a minute behind me. I timed it so my final fishing pool was right next to Booty Bay, that way I could fly back since it would be faster than hearthing.

Something I noticed while fishing these pools is that you have to get your bobber inside of the pool. If it's on the rim (outer 20%), you will not catch a tastyfish. After I realized that, I probably shaved a good three minutes of bad casts off of my time. If in doubt, just recast and get a better bobber location!

Also, to everyone who's going to be doing this for the first time, don't be nervous. I got it on my first try. Just make sure you know where the turnin guy is and have a plan down as to where you'll be fishing and how you're going to get back to Booty Bay.

Look here for where you can find the pools...

First attempt at the tournament was a victory, only trying for ?achievement=1516"">(Achievement #1516) though. Really helps on a heavy pop sever to have help from the opposing faction. Also it seems the East side of The Cape of Stranglethorn is normally less populated then the West. Though it's only from one attempt so I can only say from that one experience.

375 fishing
I would suggest always use flying mount and leave pools with players alone and go to next one.

Good luck.
