Description

Yet another ship from my fleet has been lost to those overzealous humans at Northwatch Hold!

Those bastards must be dealt with. Their paranoia has them in a state of frenzy. Trigger happy, reckless louts are shooting at anything in their sights.

Travel south along the Merchant Coast to the Hold and lay siege to their forces. Bring me the medals of their soldiers as proof. And for the love of my fleet, slay Captain Fairmount and her overzealous cannoneers!

Reward

You can choose one of these awards:
Privateer Musket
Sea Dog Britches

Progress

My fleet is in peril with Captain Fairmount and her damned cannoneers blasting away from Northwatch Hold. I want her soldiers to pay as well. Fill my hand with medals from their dead and I will know that vengeance has been given to my fallen privateers.

Completion

Alas, the righteous Alliance guns have been silenced. You shall be rewarded for your aid, <name>.

Now to tend to the grim task of recovering the bodies of the dead....

I found this quest to be really easy. Make your way to Northwatch and go up the pathway you see. You'll go pass a few buildings, and you will see a ramp leading upwards. The first tower on your left will have Captain Fairmount in it. Kill him and continue on the ramp. You will then see two other towers, one to your left and one to your far right. Both of these hold the other 2 Cannoneers you need to slay. Be sure to loot the regular mobs you kill, they are the ones that contain the medals!

Also, once you have completed this quest, be sure to visit the first tower again, and talk to the prisoner at the bottom of the tower. You will be able to accept an escort quest, ""Free From the Hold"" https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=898 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=898, where you will have to lead him all the way back to Ratchet. This was also easy, and landed me around 2,000 experience @ level 19.

The medals have either a really high drop rate or a 100% drop rate when you have the appropriate quest. Everytime I've done the quest, I've had at least two other people with me, and by the time we had killed the three leaders for this quest, we'd already gotten all of the medals we needed.

Also note that in the first tower you encoutner after entering Northwatch, there will be a Blood Elf (https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=3465 https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=3465) that wants you to escort him back to Ratchet. It is suggested that you wait to do the escort until after you have killed all three leaders. If you enter the tower and do not see the Blood Elf, someone else is currently doing the quest (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=898 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=898), so you'll have to wait.

The names of the Cannoneers is a reference to Smith &amp; Wesson, the largest handgun manufacterer in the United States.

Stupidly hard quest for casters at the level it becomes available at, Died 15 times before giving up, typically packs of 3 x level 16 mobs, 2 x melee that silences with shield slam almost continuously, and a caster that can heal to full, and then they run off and get friends at low hit points. Don't bother unless you are a melee class.

To top it off NPCs at the bottom of the tower can aggro you while you are at the top and hit you from 20 yards away.

Hard for casters, extremely easy for rogues. Pallies had an easy time too, as far as I can tell.

Due to this quest, how many theramore soldiers haven't been able to return to their families? Basically being stationed here is a death sentence.

I've done this on a druid, paladin, and rogue and found it easy. Shamans are hard to play, even with the Gladiator's shoulder enchant (+30 sta).

There's actually another path that leads to the towers, a kind of ""backdoor"". Simply hug the coastline and circle around the fortress, until the hills start to look more ""manageable"". Around SSW of the fortress (sorry, don't have the exact coordinates available), look up for a tree and start climbing there. It'll lead you straight at the foot of Smythe tower, without having to trundle through the main entrance and its tightly packed mobs, as Theramore Marines and Preservers are much more spread out up there. It eased up my Warlock's life considerably, to be honest.

For all the mages out there,
There is a fun thing you can do while you're there.
When you stand on top of cannoneer Smythe's tower you will see the dudes ship.
You can actually slow fall+blink there. Requires some timing but certainly possible.
Just right-click slow fall to disable the ability when you're floating over the ship and you will land on it.
His ship looks perfectly fine =P There's smoke coming from nowhere.

Murphy's Law doesn't even begin to describe the things that happened to me in Northwatch Hold.

If your a priest contemplating trying to solo this quest within its level range I would recommend never coming here. Keep your sanity/positive outlook regarding the universe intact and just move on, you won't regret the decision.

Did anyone else notice that the two cannoneers Smythe and Whessan sound like the gunmaking company Smith and Wesson? A reference, like the quest name perhaps?

Im a priest lvl 26... and i died once. It gets harder when there are 3 of them are attacking you...that sucks.

And about the medals; I seem to never get 10! So i cant complete. The first medal i loot counts for 2 on the quest but i still have 1 in my BP. So they stop dropping them when my quest says ive got all.... When i destroy them all and start again, its the same story.

Anyone with the same problem? I logged out just now to see if that helps... cause otherwise this was a waste of time.

Big change with Cataclysm. All of the alliance NPC's have moved out of the keep and down to 'The Merchant Coast', displacing the pirates. Only two officers need to be killed now along with the collection of the medals. The two officers, Lt. Buckland and Lt. Pyre, are located along 'The Merchant Coast' at 70,84. This is very close to the stockade holding Baron Longshore at 69.85. Lt. Buckland is down near the shore and Lt. Pyre is up near the archery butts. All of the Alliance NPC's along the way and around them drop the medals.

Just FYI, if you're waiting for fairmount to respawn, don't then jump over the rail to get down quickly. The other mobs have also respawned, and your pet won't make it down the steps fast enough to save you. :-p

As of 4.0.3a you find the guards to kill just south of Ratchet where the pirates where before. Pyre is found near the sharpshooters (Just straigth forward when you enter around 70,84) . And Buckland is found walking from the boat on the road towards the little camp with the dog and baron Longshore.

I've been trying to do this quest for a while--I've died at least 5 times from it. :c
I'm a level 18 Troll Mage. And honestly there are so many mobs that when I've killed enough of them to get to the lieutenants all of them have respawned again. Someone always manages to run up to you as soon as you start attacking. I feel like this quest is way too hard for the level--the level 15 lieutenants are killing me!

This post hasnt been updated since for awhile it seems. So for clarification, if anyone is having trouble with this quest, you are looking for Lieutenant Pyre and Lieutenant Buckland. You can find Lieutenant Pyre on the right around 71,83 right next to the archers on the Merchant Coast. Lieutenant Buckland is a little further down on the left at 70,84.
