Mea Culpa, Lord Valthalak

Use the Brazier of Beckoning to summon Lord Valthalak. Dispatch him, and use Lord Valthalak's Amulet on the corpse. Then, return Lord Valthalak's Amulet to the Spirit of Lord Valthalak.
  •
Lord Valthalak slain
Lord Valthalak's Amulet
Provided Item:
Brazier of Beckoning

Description

All is now ready, <name>.

When alive, Lord Valthalak used to inhabit what is now The Beast's chamber. Go there and use the Brazier of Beckoning to summon forth Lord Valthalak. It will reincorporate him, so he'll have to be killed again. I'd take care of The Beast first, and be sure take enough friends along to survive the upper portion of Blackrock Spire.

Once you've dispatched Valthalak, use the amulet on his corpse. With his spirit reunified, he'll likely want his amulet back, as well.

Good luck!

Progress

<class>, you dare disturb my rest!

Completion

How fortunate for you that I know you're not part of the original group that stole this from me.

I'll take back what is mine now, mortal! Give the amulet to me!

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 995 experience (59 70 at max. level)

Talk about a difficult fight! This guy is a total pita!

Prior to downing Valthalak we killed Ossirian and Nef on the same night. Of the 3 fights everyone in my group agreed that Valthalak was the most difficult. I am not sure if Blizzard scales the difficulty depending on your gear but considering how much trouble we had with him this is definitely possible.

Our group consisted of the following

1 Warrior
2 Paladins
1 Priest (me)
1 Warlock
3 Rogues
1 Mage
1 Hunter

Almost all players had some tier 2 and a good amount of tier 1. I personally had 3 tier 2 and 3 tier 1 with Benediction.

Our strategy for our successful attempt went like this:

Our tank pulled Valthalak to the wall where you stage to kill the Beast. He was accompanied by 1 rogue to kill adds that appear close to Valthalak. All others stood back and DPSed with a primary focus on the adds. The lock and occasionally the hunter focused on burning his mana. This is very important as when he has mana he seems to heal himself. Our mage also hit him with improved counter spell whenever possible.

After 40% stage 1 ends and it is an easy fight as it is just a matter of DPSing him down and keeping the main tank up.

Vent was very helpful as we could call out when we were being stunned so that no one died due to being stunned for the full 8 seconds.

Even with this strat it was not easy and did not go perfectly. I died just as stage 1 ended as he hit me with a shadow bolt that did 4700 damage. Our tank died when Valthalak had about 10K health remaining as our palies were out of mana. Thankfully the remaining members were able to do some awesome DPS and finished him quickly.

Things to remember

1 Burn his mana
2 Kill the adds as fast as possible

Once you've killed Lord Valthalak make sure you use https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=22048"" class=""qundefined icontiny"" style=""background-image: url(images/icons/tiny/inv_jewelry_necklace_27.gif)"">Lord Valthalak's Amulet on his corpse! I didn't pay close enough attention to the quest instructions and headed back to https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=16033"">(NPC #16033). I'd forgotten you have to talk to Lord Valthalak's spirit first, and by the time I'd returned, his corpse had despawned. D'oh! So even though I had the quest completed, I had to summon and kill him again just to turn it in.

Soloable as a level 80 hunter with a bit of luck. A few notes:

Have you pet tank him where he is and you'll be out of range of his shadow attacks, so you don't need any shadow protection pots. However shadow resistance may be useful against the assassins.

If the assassins manage to lock down you and your pet, it's game over. Multishot them as soon as they appear. They die in 2 hits.

Don't bother with Viper Sting; it doesn't drain his mana fast enough.

Soloed as a http://armory.wow-europe.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Al%27Akir&amp;n=Libbe lvl 80 retridin with full naxx heroic epics.

Phase 1 is easy. Just save your Divine Storm until the adds spawn and use it the second they do. Nameplates help alot on this (default 'V'). Use your FoL everytime Art of War procs.

Phase 2 is somewhat difficult. When you reach 40% he will become uninteractable while yelling ""I've gone easy on you thus far, but now you bore me. Witness the magnificence of my power, and despair!"". And then he starts burning down your hp. I had to use bubble because I wasn't paying much attention at this point.

Right before he dies he yells ""I will not die again! Not to the likes of you!"" and hurts like hell. I had around 1-2k hp left when he died.

I believe this fight would have been a lot easier if I knew it would be this hard.. -.-

This is definitely the hardest non raid boss to try and solo from the original game, and quite possibly from TBC and WOTLK too, due to the fact that you have virtually no time at all to down those adds before defile is cast.

For rogues, it is even harder as we have no healing abilities, no bubble, no pet. However after about 10 tries, I finally got him down. Yay.

Unless you are combat specced and have Fan of Knives, forget it, you wont get the adds down no matter what you try.

Here is what I did. Equipped in nothing more than lv 200 gear.

Equip Zandalarian Hero Badge (this is the Warrior badge from the Heart of Hakkar Quest)
Equip a spec that allows FoK and Unfair Advantage from Combat spec AND Preparation from Subtlety. (Macro the Prep with Evasion) It also helps to have a glyph of evasion equipped as this will give you an extra 10 secs overall.
Drink an Indestructible potion, which gives extra armor for 2 mins.

Open up on Valthalak and immediately pop Evasion, Blade Flurry, plus a trinket for extra attack power (these should be macroed btw). Attack him for maybe 5-6 seconds then STOP because the adds will soon appear. (If you continue attacking you wont have enough energy to immediately use FoK, and it NEEDS to be immediate)

As soon as the adds appear, FoK them, then open up again on Valthalak for another 5-6 seconds and again wait for the adds. Now pop your macroed Preparation/Evasion. FoK the adds again, and re-open up on Valthalak, if he doesnt get to below 45k health V quickly now, you will need to wait for a 3rd set of adds (which appeared for me)

FoK the last set of adds and he should be below the limit which takes you to phase 2, in which the adds wont appear again. It is now essentially a dps race as to who can get who down first.

Pop your Zandalarian badge. And at about 20k health, pop Cloak of Shadows. I finished him with about 1.5k health left.

V V satisfying fight. Good luck with it.

This is soloable as an Affliction Warlock at level 80 with decent PvE gear.
  • Begin the fight by dropping an Infernal right on top of Lord Valthalak. The Infernal is crucial for killing off the Spectral Assassins.
  • Move right next to Lord Valthalak, maintaining the regular Affliction DPS priority rotation and interweaving Hellfire to kill off Spectal Assassins when the Infernal is impaired by https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=27177 Defile. The self-heal provided by Haunt and Corruption is sufficient for this phase.
  • When Phase 1 ends, continue with all out DPS. Should your health go low, use Healthstone, healing potion or Drain Life.

Did it this this evening with myself (76 Prot Warrior), a 73 Hunter, a 70 Death Knight, and a 58 Warlock (who we were running through UBRS just for the sake of him getting Jenkins as well as UBRS credit).

Has to be hardest non-raid boss in vanilla WoW. Just because of the shadows; when they spawn they draw all attention because of the fact they kill in 10 seconds plus the stun. First attempt we had him down to 5000 life and I died - rest of group followed right after, I didn't even see how or why I got killed, my life meter was still good I thought and I wasn't stunned by the shadows.

2nd attempt we got the killing blow on him after losing 2 men and I died right as he did, but fortunately was able to come back and complete the quest.

Now I just have to figure out how I am going to make Scholo runs for the Helm of Valor considering that warriors have a hard time with the cultists in shadow form and I need to farm Gandling... all for the sake of completionism.

Managed this solo as an 80 druid. I tried twice as feral and failed - the adds locked me the instant they appeared. I then switched to boomkin and got it without too much trouble. Cooldowns seemed to be the key. I hit Starfall and trees early; Starfall killed the first set of adds, and the trees killed the second. After that it was just a matter of burning him down.

As a prot pally with ulduar/TOC gear I got owned by the adds in this fight. I recommend going as ret spec and making sure you save divine storm for the adds. You'll know they're coming when the boss is surrounded by a large orange glowing thing.

extremely easy as hunter. just stay at max range and multishot adds in 1st phase. 2nd phase is even easier.
btw... its not really needed to use glyph of multishot because you have enough time while adds run to you. but i used it :) just to be sure

After many tries I've done it solo with lvl 80 protection warrior. Here are tips:
  • First group of assasins killed with Schockwave - strong enough to kill them with one shot
  • Second group killed with combo Cleave + Thunder Clap - since Cleave is procced on next melee if you stop attacking boss it is popped at the same time as Thunder Clap, and both should do enough damage to kill the group
  • Third group killed with Shockwave - I have glyph so CD is only 17 seconds and the last group appeared in 18th seccond of fight
After 3 groups of assasins boss went down to 40k health. Second phase is a piece of cake - in hp race boss has no chances with protection warrior (I went down to like 30k hp from 36k total).

And another tip since Thunder Clap CD is 6s with a bit of luck you can use only Cleave + Thunder Clap - I've tried 3 times and it didn't work out for me.

With patch 3.3 Improved Revange hits two targets - it hits hard enough to kill assasins with one shot, but it is not the best idea to use it. It is almost certain that one of the targets will be Valthalak, so if he spawns two assasins one will survive and kill you.

Just a simple clarification about summoning him:

The brazier of beckoning seems to be extremely picky about where it is placed. You cannot set it just anywhere in the room.

- After you dispatch Beast, go back outside of the barricade, and stand so you are facing Beast's room.

- Position yourself so that you are closest to the left-hand corner.

- Immediately as you step over the barricade, turn left to round the corner, then stop walking.

- This is where you place the brazier.

Hopefully this helps someone else from wasting time running around going WTF, and thinking the quest is bugged.

After you are done fighting him (for info on the fight itself, see above posts, as well as the hotlinks of his name), use your amulet on his corpse. A beam will channel onto his corpse, and his spirit will appear. You get the quest from him to return to Bodley.

After I accepted the quest from his spirit though, my toon still remained there channeling the beam from the amulet, and would not stop channeling. My toon could still move however, so I moved my toon out of the room, and once I broke LOS of the corpse, the channeling stopped.

Edited for clarity.

ugh anyone k now if this quest bugs out if you forget to channel the amulet? because I forgot went back and he had obviously despawned so i tried placing the brazier again and again and my toon made the animation that it was putting something down but nothing happened. I've been trying for the past half hour.

Edit: If this happens, what I did was abandon the quest reget the amulet off bodley and accept the quest again, yeah you'll have to go clear up to The Beast again &amp; kill Lord Valthalak again. This time I didn't forget to channel lol!

Just took it solo as a level 80 demonology lock in basic t9 gear. During the opening phase, I found it easy to dispatch the adds with immolation aura and rain of fire. When he changes up, though, the above posts aren't kidding: drain life could barely keep up with his damage output, and it may've been my felguard's taunt that kept me alive. Fire up those DoTs, and drain life as fast as you can.

With decent modern gear (some heroic Frozen Halls gear, all the triumph badge gear and a few frost badge pieces - no advanced raid gear) this is not as bad a solo as it sounds like from the above comments (at least for me, a rogue).

I opened with https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=47734 AP trink &amp; https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=51690 Killing Spree and popped https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=13877 Blade Flurry immediately after. I only got one https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=16066 add spawn which died to https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=13877 Flurry; just make sure to turn towards them as they spawn so the Flurry works. I was able to save https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=13750 Adrenaline Rush, https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=48722 Haste trink, and https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=26669 Evasion for phase two, and finished with about half health.

My first attempt I did die because I didn't expect the https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=16066 adds and didn't pop https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=13877 Flurry in time to stop the https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=27177 Defile. Have https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=13877 it up a few seconds into the fight and you should easily take https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=16042 Valthalak to phase 2 before it expires. I didn't feel the need for https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=51723 Fan of Knives; I wouldn't trust my timing anyway.

As a lvl 80 prot warrior fighting Valthalak, it took me two tries to beat him. First one the speed at which the defile is cast (10 sec stun + instant death upon spell's end) made me question whether I could actually beat him without some help. However, the second try proved much easier.

Simply put, my advice is to get rend on Valthalak and watch your global cooldowns. The very second you see the adds spawn, hit thunderclap. It will spread the rend (make sure it's always on valthalak obviously) and the tclap will do like 90% of the health of the adds. Rend will tick once, maybe twice, and they will die and you can go back to dps'ing the boss for am oment. I also did a shockwave and killed them instantly for one cooldown. The adds spawned 3 times in total before Valthalak went into his second phase and they stopped spawning.

Very doable boss for a warrior, but you absolutely must watch your global cooldowns or you will be stuck waiting the 1.5 seconds to cast if you are unlucky and that means you get defiled and die. Just do some quick dps at the start (2 or 3 spells) and then hold off only keeping rend up on him. Do not waste thunderclap cooldowns. You can simply tclap + cleave (glyph for the extra hit) or let rend do the job. If you do not tclap the very instant the adds spawn, you are dead.
