Despite being elite, you can do this quest solo easily (and at an early level), as long as you have some patience. Around Frostwhisper Gorge, you should find two or three crystal formations just outside aggro range of the elite giants (usually visible from the road). Grab crystals from those formations, then wait on a respawn. You can also follow high level Alliance players into the gorge, as they have a reputation quest to kill the giants. Just use the crystal formations that they conveniently clear away for you.

This is an easy quest in the upper 50's, because this place is farmed a lot, and even if it's not clear, it's extremely easy to get these without aggro.

The quest is worth 6600 xp. Here are the locations for some of the Shards (courtesy bugnaz):

North side of the Bridge:
59,64 (down the main pathway into the chasm).
61,65 (to the South-West of the start of the bridge as you head South).
63,66 (to the South-East of the start of the bridge as you head South).

South side of the Bridge:
60,71 (to the South-West after you have crossed the bridge heading South. There is a level 59 ""Rabid Shardtooth"" bear to deal with here).
61,72 (to the South-West after you have crossed the bridge heading South. There is a Frostmaul Giant here but it is grab-able).

From either side of the Bridge:
65,70 (from heading South before you cross the bridge, head clockwise around the chasm staying away from the edge).
(Or: After you have crossed the bridge heading South - to the North-East. Head Anti-clockwise around the chasm staying away from the edge. Takes some getting to but would be quicker than a fight, death and re-spawn).

Many of the players here are right. You can get four walking down into the gorge without encountering a single giant, but with some real luck you can actually down a giant as low as 56 solo if you are a pet class. Barely.

Most of the shards on the ground are down inside the gorge itself. There are a number of safe corners that you can run to to drop aggro when the giants leash back to their spawnpoints. They hit reasonably hard but move slowly: you can outrun them on foot. With a bit of patience and watching their movement patterns, it's easy to collect 10 shards in a few minutes without having to fight them.

Yeah, if your not lazy you can simply loot the crystal's from the edges of the canyon all the way around, I just ran around the perimeter and completed the quest without having to down a single mob, just make sure to watch your aggro.

as a 56 mage i was able to grab all the easy ones, just like everyone else, but got tired of waiting on the respawns. So, since I am frost, i decided to try to aggro the giant to my elemental, then loot and run away. Do not try this, because as soon as i clicked the crystal on the ground the giant aggroed onto me, and had an easy time of killing me

By Mavrck82 on 07/28/2007 (Patch 2.1.3)
As a rogue, this worked for me: Try to get as far away from the Giant as possible, and start the extraction. If he starts to attack, just use your ""blind"", which will give you plenty of time to get the shard. Then just run away (or vanish), they are slow. OR, you can get your combo points up and kidney shot them, but that may be cutting it close.

Freezing trap does not work on the giants, so no trap, loot and run for hunters. They are, however, perfectly kitable, so this is easily and quickly done with a hunter. I was 55 and had no problems.

When i did this on my main the (group) thing got to me so i asked a friend to come help me... it was easy... he killed 1 of the elites..... remembering this when it came to my alt i knew where to go and what i was up against....

i didn't aggro any of them.... i went to 58.64 and there were 3 right there with no mobs... the fourth 1 - I had to go in a bit and there was an elite walking around but he never came close enough for me to aggro... maybe i was just lucky but this quest can be done without a grp

If you are a hunter, you should not have any problems with this at all.

I gave a shot at the giants as a level 56 BM hunter, and as long as I had a Mend Pet on 2 times in the

fight I could take them down pretty fast. Even the level 60 ones will be piece of a cake.

As for the Shards, theese can be taken easily without pulling, just look around.

As a 57 Prot Paladin I was able to solo the giants while collecting the shards down below. Unfortunately none of the spawns up above were up, forcing me to have to deal with giants face-to-face. :/

Mats: Heavy Runecloth Bandages, Major Mana Potions
Buffs: Righteous Fury (Improved), Blessing of Sanctuary, Ret Aura

vs Level 60's - Pull while mounted, run to a cubby hole where the pat wont reach you. Keep up JoL + SoL and Holy Shield. HOJ when you get to ~10%, then Holy Light x2. Continue on, drink the mana potion when your mana is low. When health gets low again Bubble, then Holy Light x1 and bandage. The mob should die shortly.

vs Level 59's - Pull while mounted, run to cubby hole, keep up JoL + SoL and Holy Shield. HOJ when it's on cooldown. When you get to ~10% Bubble then Bandage. If you get low again, HOJ then Holy Light, but I never had to heal a second time.

Level 59 Shadow Priest, i was able to take down the Elites, i just made sure i was fully buffed - Fortitude, Inner fire, Touch of weakness, And kept PW:Shield Up.

First i cast Vampiric Touch + Vampiric Embrace and SW:Pain to help keep my health and mana up. I then cast Mind Blast and Spam Mind Flay until Mind Blast has recharged. Make sure you keep PW:Sheild up as soon as you can cast it. Also to reduce dmg being taken use Psychic Scream and spam Mind Flay while its under its effect, this i found to be good for getting health and some mana back up.

The elite might cast a healing spell therefore use dispel magic and it will unbuff the elite of its healing spell.

Easy shards for example:
(seen from north to south)
- one right before the bridge (61,65) - no mob near
- one more further to right, near wood (60,65) - 1 mob near but far enough
- one more further to right, but walk around, to go ""down"" (58,63) - no mob near
- one more further down the path (58,65) - no mob near
- one down the path (59,67) - 1 mob near but far enough
- one left after bridge (62,72) - one mob near but far enough

That is all so far i can see.
Getting 4 pieces is no big problem.

The mobs hit you around 300, with around 600 crit. Pretty hard.
That is with stoneskin totem!

Picked up 2 on my way down, ran around nekkid by foot, speed enchant on AB boots <3 no hit whatsoever even when agroing directly by walking trough the giants... got to a safe ridge where I lost agro... used the mechanical yeti on a big guy and picked the remaining 2 crystals. peace of cake... ran off by mount (suprisingly they were hitting me when mounted, but not when I was running by foot) done as 58 orc warrior.

I would just like to add my solo strategy as a 57 BM Hunter... for me, the giants were all up on the shards, there were no higher level players clearing them as others have mentioned, and after I downed 1 or 2, I realized it was a little too hard to just kill them and THEN take the shards, so I had to improvise. here's what I dwowhead:1,id:

I scouted for shards that were in the aggro range of, at most, 1 giant. I'd send my pet in with Intimidation cast on it to make sure the giant focused on her while I snuck in and ""ninja'd"" the shard. with Intimidation, there was no way the giant would get distracted by me and interrupt my ""ninja'ing"". as soon as I grabbed the shard, I cast Mend Pet to make sure my pet survived in time for me to run and then cast Aspect of the Cheetah (if it wasn't already on) and made a run for it (yes, leaving my pet behind) so as to leave combat, making sure to dodge any other mobs that might come after me. the beauty of it is, you don't have to worry about ""sacrificing"" your pet and having to rez it later, because as a hunter, you should know after leaving your pet behind a certain distance, it disappears. soooo, run until it disappears. when I was at said distance, I called my pet back to me and lo and behold, my pet was near 100% and juuuuust fine.

to summarize:
- find a shard that is in the aggro range of ONE giant
- cast Intimidation
- send pet to Attack targeted giant
- ""ninja"" shard
- cast Mend Pet (optional; depends on your pet's armor, health, and whatnot)
- cast Aspect of the Cheetah
- RUN and reach safety
- Call Pet
- repeat as necessary, which in this case, is 3 more times

Easy as 58 shadowpriest. You can kill the elites with no problems at all.

DoT them up (DON'T FORGET VAMPIRIC EMBRACE), mindblast, mindflay and keep shield up at all times. Should go down no problems.

Shards are also on the ground.

As people had said it was possible to solo this, thought I would give it a try on my lvl 55 demon warlock. Found three of the shards by sneaking around, but could not find a fourth on its own so thought I'd have a go at killing the lvl 60 elite. Managed to down him no problem, if I can do it, anyone can do it.
