The Scrimshank Redemption

Discover the fate of Junior Surveyor Scrimshank, and bring either him or his surveying equipment to Senior Surveyor Fizzledowser in Gadgetzan.
Scrimshank's Surveying Gear

Description

Oh, this is just terrible! I sent out my top assistant, Junior Surveyor Scrimshank, into the desert southeast of here. That's an area we call the Gaping Chasm. Well, he's gone missing, and his last report had more of those weird bugs where he was. Could it be that they've infested two major regions of the desert now?

I need you to head into the Gaping Chasm and look for Scrimshank, please! That... or at least find his surveying equipment. I fear that may be all that is left of the poor sod.

Progress

Well, what news do you have? You look like you've been in quite the fight... is Scrimshank alive?

Completion

He was a good goblin, young Scrimshank. Let's hope that his demise was not in vain by what he was able to record with his surveying equipment.

It seems as though we have quite the situation on our hands here with these bugs. They're way too cunning for their own good, and the research we've done so far is shaping up to indicate that they might even be under the controlling influence of a third party! If this is the case, then it bodes ill for not only Gadgetzan, but the whole desert!

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 440 experience (26 40 at max. level)
  • 250 Reputation with Gadgetzan

Okay, this quest sucks (at least as a 46 mage). It's very soloable, but it takes lots of regen time. When you get to the point on the Wowhead map, you'll realize it's not there. This hung me up for like ten minutes. It's in a tunnel below. You have to go towards the spiral-looking-thing on your map. Take the tunnel to the left (I don't know if there was one on the right, it looked like there could have been but I guessed left and ended up being correct). Just follow it until you have a chance to go to the coords (56, 71 I believe) that the map shows. Good Luck.

If the toughness of the quest doesn't tick you off, then the amount of pats will. The sheer amount of pats that roam back and forth is OUTSTANDING. There's about 1-2 for every single hallway, making solo battles almost impossible, as you're bound to get an add.

Here is a quick link of the path to follow once you have reach 56.70 just go down and take the first entrance to the left. As you will see on this map I created and hosted myself it will show you exactly where to go from the inside.

Enjoy...

A lot of people would think that actually FINDING the guy would be the worst part of this quest. . . Well, I think that going to this CREEPY place is the worst part!! Well, anyway. . . Well, The Gapping Chasm is pretty much in the bottom Southeast corner of Tanaris, Southeast of Dunemaul Compound and South of Broken Pillar. Scrimshank's Surveying Gear is in what many people are calling it, ""The Spiral."" Looking at the map, the spiral (in The Gapping Chasm,) is the thing with a curved line by it, which is on the most Eastern part of the Gapping Chasm. There are level 37-39 creeping alien dudes here, making this a little tricky, but being a 49 druid, I could just prowl to it. Once you enter the Spiral, there is a narrow tunnel, with different parts branching off from it. Take your first left. Proceed through the tunnel with caution, 'cause there's still alien dudes in here. Go to the end of that the tunnel, and then take the only other tunnel that has been untraveled (the tunnel you didn't come in through) in this little room. After a few seconds of traveling through this tunnel, there's a fork in the road. Take the left, (Man, you have to take left A LOT!!!,) and then you enter a REALLY WEIRD ROOM, and after taking a few steps into this room, turn left. Travel down that tiny little part of the room and there's the Surveying Gear. It takes a while, but hey, you get 6300experience and 250 rep. with Gadgetzan!

Another trick to do this quest and a few others (if the graveyard is nearby) is to scope out the location of where you need to go as a ghost rather than risk triple pulling because of a wrong turn. Good hunting.

Couldn't do this with my 50 SPriest; abandoned it.

Problem was those bugs spawn more bugs and then even more.

It makes casting near impossible. Have fun.

I killed fast enough on my 51 Shadow Priest to only have at most 2 swarmer adds by the time I killed the Swarmers so only 4 adds that all die with 1 hit of a wand. Fights went something like PW: Shield, Vampiric Touch, SW: Pain, Mind Blast, Mind Flay twice and they would die. I also found killing the adds that, assuming your melee skill is high enough to not miss a ton, a melee swing on one followed by a wand shot on the other led to the fastest killing of the spawns.

As an FYI to the Shadow Priests, you'll get a few extra ticks of Spirit Tap if you have the skill. The adds trigger it when you kill them.

In conclusion, to all this info the basic directions are go down the ramp at 55,70 first left tunnel you see go left keep going left down into a circle room. Left again and when you get to a butterfly shaped room go left again and congratulations you have found the gear!

The tunnels are linked so it doesn't matter which one you take. Just follow the paths that DON'T lead tto dead ends (pretty damn easy to tell) and make yourself to the butterfly room.

As a lvl 49 holy pally this was soloeable but it was still a bit difficult since I had to use a ton of drinks and food so as not to waste mana or run out. In the fights, the method I used was to holy shock, seal of crusader, judgment, righteousness, judgment, holy shock, hammer of wrath, and then consecrate to kill the little spawns. It was possible to kill two at once and I managed three one time simply because I had a couple potions to use- without those, three would have killed me. I took the advice someone said earlier and set my hearth to gadgetzan because I did not want to run all the way back out of that cave. I also only had to bubble twice, so all in all, I think it was fairly manageable since I didn't die once. :)

An easy quest for a 48 prot pally. Only one 3-pull at the end was any real challenge, needing a bubble-bandage at one point. (The 3-pull happened in the final butterfly room next to the quest pickup, and I'm pretty sure this can't turn into a 4-pull with running workers because the only mobs nearby had already come as part of the 3-pull.)

If you're a pally, keep Retribution Aura active at all times when in the hive. Both the Parasites that spawn when a bug is killed, as well as the little Swarm bugs have low (1?) health and will die from a single hit against that aura; in plate, you shouldn't be seeing more than 1 damage from the little swarm bugs and at most low double digits from the one hit each you might take from the Parasites.

This is probably really an easy quest in general for anyone who does not depend on pushback-able spells to fight and survive; the mini bugs do very little damage so their only real problem is the spell interruption. I'd take Blizzard's level for this quest as a pretty strong recommendation, if you are lower you may have more issues due to a larger aggro radius (as I entered the hive, I saw a 45 warrior making a run for it, if that's any indication).

Yeah, as a 48 shadowpriest, this was a hard quest when it came to killing the swarmers. Eventually I had to use fear to fear half the adds off me, wand them down and then kill the bug. It's a hard quest if you don't have AoE/thorns.

Plus half the crap in here creeped me the hell out.

I read through a few posts and was confused because some said to go right and some said to go left. I decided to follow the directions of taking the right tunnels and was rewarded.

As a 49 druid, I prowled into the bottom tunnel and, once inside, took the first right. I followed it down and came to another fork. Once again, I took the right tunnel, which led to a big open room. I went straight across it into a butterfly shaped room. I found the equipment in the far right hand side. I waited for a pat to leave, killed the guard and grabbed the equipment.

Quick note to hunters:
This quest is really easy to do for you. The pet will guard you against the Halazzi parasites that spawn when some of the mobs die, and Exploding Trap laid below the Swarmer will take care of the annoying adds that would otherwise flatten your dear pet.

As a 49 frost mage, I didn't find it that difficult. While I did encounter a major number of pats, the most annoying part were the little swarms that would spawn once the bug would die....but a single arcane blast took care of that.

Just take your time, slowly pick your way in and out and you'll be able to pull it off.

As a beginner (been playing for about a month) I found this quest really easy. Did it solo as a lvl 47 warrior and only died once (not a good idea to talk on the phone at the same time :P ).

Found the tunnel, took the first one and just stayed left. Pice of cake! The baby bugs are really annoying though. As a warrior thunder clap really helps.

Took me 20 minutes, tops. Remember to set your heartstone to Gadgetzan though, saves a lot of time.

And for the miners there are both mithril and true silver down there.

Good luck!

Did this as a 46 Discipline Priest with minimal problems. My tactics were of course to use PW:Shield every time it was off cooldown, not up, and without the weakened soul debuff. Also, taking it slow and drinking after every pull made it easier to handle. A good idea would be to make sure you know where the pats are and where they're going. This biggest problems were the swarmers, not only because every other hit was a crushing blow (level 50 mobs, level 46 toon), plus the little guys. AoE is definitely helpful here; every silithid spawns 2-3 level 1 mobs when they die, and are easily taken care of either with a whack of your weapon, or a quick AoE (such as Holy Nova, Arcane Explosion). The only major issue I had was some random 70-ish person waltzing in to mine something, and instead of killing the mobs he aggrod, trained them onto me so I quickly perished after they deaggrod from him. It isn't particularly difficult, but neither is it very easy. I don't understand why this is considered a ""yellow"" quest at 46, considering most of the mobs, at that level, are orange...

I really, really wish I were given the opportunity to read the insect report, though.

Just did this as a 50 Shadow Priest and it was really easy. Holy nova is annoying to use because it breaks Shadowform but necessary to kill those parasites that pop out after you've killed one.

It's soloable as retadin lv.45, but you need 3 points in Judgement of the Wise. The problem at 45 is that your melee hits are negligible against insects lv.50 (you will miss most of the time), and very weak against lv.49s, so you need to kill them with Consecration and judgements. JotW will give you more than enough mana to keep consec up full time and keep yourself healthy. Every few fights you might need a drink, because of judgement misses, but nothing too taxing. Lv.47-48 mobs will go down easily without consec.

I just solo'd this as a SPriest at level 47. Typical SPriest fighting - if you have more than 1 mob, put a Shadow Word: Pain on all of them - and then focus one until it was dead.
Keeping yourself shielded is key - and the parasites die from holy nova/1 weapon hit. I hit them with my staff, with 1/235 Staff training, and I haven't seen one hit miss off of any of the parasites.
