This quest is part of a chain that ends with your killing VanCleef.

As for the quest itself; it's very easy. Simple stay in close proximity with the Defias Trator and help him fight whatever mobs may attack you or him.

The Defias Traitor will walk from Sentinel Hill to Moonbrook at the entrance to The Deadmines.

There's really only one tricky bit with this quest, and it's at the fountain in Moonbrook. Assuming no one else has cleared the area for you you'll see a mob at the cart and a mage at the fountain. Because the traitor won't stop unless he's engaged in combat, the first mob aggros and runs after him but doesn't stop him until he's in aggro range of the fountain mage. As soon as the mage hits the traitor, he runs to the fountain and aggros another mage on the other side. Be ready with poly, sap, a pet, or a friend to stem the tide.

Note that this portion of the quest isn't given by Stoutmantle, but rather by The Defias Traitor at the bottom of the tower steps. It took me forever to figure that out.

This quest will lead you to Van Cleef inside the deadmines.

You can solo this quest if you are carefull, but it is a good idea to team up with someone for the quest. He will lead you to the entrance to the deadmines, and you will have to fight off anywhere from 6-8 on the way. I was able to solo this as a Paladin, and only had to heal once. If you have some potions, or have heal spells just solo the quest.

This quest is a must, so do not pas it up.

You really need a group to this although quite often many people come to Moonbrook not to do this quest but to just kill the mobs that are here so it can be soloable, you just have to hope other people are killing at the same time you want to do this quest.

If you get him most of the way to the hideout and die, don't release. He will keep fighting and if he survives, he'll finish the quest and you can just release and go hand it in.

The Defias Traitor will walk you down to Moonbrook and down to the Deadmines entrance.(not the portal, the one beside the meeting stone)
You will have to fight the mobs that see him or see you.

I did solo this easily as a level 16 human rogue. I did not have to use any potions, but you may want to. If you are a clothy(not including lvl 18 and higher) I think you should get a group or try to stay away from the mobs without aggroing. Now the Defias Traitor does walk in the middle of the road, so be very careful.

Soloing this as a 15 Priest was not an issue. This quest is a lot easier to solo now that escort NPCs are not quite as pants-on-head retarded as they once were.

In ye olden days of yore, if enemies aggroed you, the escortee would gleefully disregard your plight and keep walking while you were trying to keep yourself alive. Typically said escortee would then pull the next four mobs onto himself while you're still fighting the first one, die in roughly two seconds, and then you'd tend to join him shortly after. But in this modern, glorious age, the escort AI will now stop and assist when you are attacked. Apparently Blizzard decided that the hunter/warlock pet defensive AI might be useful for these NPCs. Knowing this mechanic, you can do some preemptive pulls and avoid getting shoved into a 6-on-2 fight. Just note that merely aggroing something will not switch the escort to attack mode -- you must take damage before the AI switches from walking to assisting.

Also, the Defias Traitor can be healed and buffed with any means you may have, so https://vanillawowdb.com/?spell=1244 charge him up before you step into Moonbrook.

Lastly, recent patches have added a graveyard just northwest of Moonbrook. Keep the Traitor up at all costs, draw aggro off of him and sacrifice yourself if necessary. If you should die, he can hold his own against a single mob for a few moments. Just run back, res, and rejoin the battle as quickly as you can. As long as he doesn't die, you won't fail the quest.

If you're patient, try scouting the area of Moonbrook first. Sometimes, random spawns do not favor you. For example, I died twice because the wagon before the fountain were all Pillagers. Despite the nerf, five Pillagers will make short work of a lone Warrior. After the corpse run, I found out I would still have to fight three more (thanks to the inn, fountain and barn). I've never seen so many Pillagers together in my life, and I hope I won't again.

Pity me.

As of Patch 4.0, a couple things to note:

1) If you try to accept this quest while mounted, the NPC disappears.

2) If the elemental invasion point at Sentinel Hill is active while you try to accept this quest, the NPC will go nuts trying to kill the elementals, and get himself nuked. Clear the invasion out before you start it.
