Amongst the Ruins

Bring the Fathom Core to Je'neu Sancrea at Zoram'gar Outpost, Ashenvale.
Fathom Core

Description

The Twilight's Hammer has moved into the Moonshrine Ruins of Blackfathom Deeps. Their presence can only serve to coerce the elements into working against us. If left unchecked, this region will be theirs for good.

<name>, go into Blackfathom and find the ruin's fathom stone; it should be somewhere close in the water. In it is a fathom core - a device that when properly read it will relate a history of all elemental activity. If I have it, I and the Earthen Ring can maybe do something to stop them!

Reward

Also, you get: 45

Progress

Have you been successful in locating the fathom core? Without it we'll have no idea what the Twilight's Hammer is exactly up to down there.

Completion

This is exactly what I need! A fathom core is an incredible well of information that we will be able to draw much good from. Whatever the Twilight's Hammer is up to in there - and believe me when I say it is no good - my comrades and I will now uncover.

You've done well here today; the Earthen Ring looks upon you warmly for assisting us. You've also helped the Horde as a whole, and for that you should be proud.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:

The Fathom Core is actually under the water. The water area I am talking about is the part where the path actually makes walls for you to walk inbetween bodies of water.

The Fathom core is found as a lootable item called Fathom Stone, so don't let that fool you. When Barn Aquanis spawns, kill him and you get a Strange Water Globe, which leads you to the quest, https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=6922 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=6922 .

It's not a 28 elite, it is a 24 elite. You need to loot him to get the follow on quest as well as take the fathom core. This can be confusing as I am sure some people have just killed him and not picked up the quest.
The fathom stone is not easy to find despite the excellent instructions from previous people. We had to get in the water and swim around to find it as couldn't see it from land.

Since it's hard to find, here is a map. The instructions on wowhead were not exactly specific.
https://vanillawowdb.com/?maps=719:522825 https://vanillawowdb.com/?maps=719:522825

I had to take my 70 to go find this, since I hadn't seen it as a group with my alt.

It is indeed underwater. It doesn't shimmer like most other quest objectives, so keep an eye out. Under the walkway, in the water, where the dot on the map is.

Once you loot it, a 24 elite elemental comes out.

Just a flavour note.

""Among the Ruins"" is the first mission of the Zerg campaign in StarCraft.

The Fathom Core is found in the Moonshrine Ruins: this is the water room with stone hallways and pillars just before the sanctum, where Twilight Lord Kelris is located. If you look on your minimap, you will see a darker circle in the middle of the lighter grey areas designating the hallways and paths for this room. Jump in the water, swim under water to the dark circle location on your map to the Fathom Core - it is a cylindrical item, dark grey and doesn't sparkle as typical quest items do. It spawns a water elemental when looted.

This quest, as well as ""The Essence of Aku'Mai"" and ""Blackfathom Villainy"" (picked up inside the instance) count towards Loremaster of Kalimdor.

undead 'lock with a vw, tried this at lv 32 or so and got iced about a dozen times. forgot about it for a while, came back at level 51 to try again along with ""allegiance to the old gods"" and the second half of ""orb of soran 'ruk"" and it was a proverbial piece of cake. the last set of coords is good. the target is simply a plain post, if you don't mouse over it, you wouldn't think it was anything but part of the scenery.

Here's a hint for you. If you're catching up on quests that you missed for loremaster don't just leave after you get the stone. If you did and you went to turn it in without looting baron aquanis then you won't be able to loot the stone to make him appear again to get his item. Just an fyi.

Don't be fooled by the map (and coords) on Wowhead and the clipping on your minimap.

Continue south after the https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=4887 Ghamoo-ra and do a double right turn before https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=6243 Gelihast. The map will expand and you should come to http://www.wowwiki.com/Moonshrine_Ruins Moonshrine Ruins (ext. link).

The stone is in the water to the right of the path going through the water. :)

Alright the comments here are all currently incorrect regarding its location.

It is in the final chamber of the dungeon, in the water below the bridge.

The locations given in picture form here all indicate that it is located along a path (in a spot where there is no water).

Follow the path to the fork on the right side of the map, go south, and search in the water in the large cavern not shown on the map.
