Death Cap

Description

I am devising a potion that requires rare mushrooms, mushrooms that grow only in a certain cave. The cave lies behind Cliffspring Falls, to the east and slightly north along the mountains.

I would go there myself, but I was advised by the Grove of the Ancients to stay away from that place. Our venerable allies sense that the cave is the hiding place for a new evil in Darkshore.

Please, <name>, gather the mushrooms for me. And while doing so, scout the cave to confirm the Ancients' fears.

Reward

You will receive:

Progress

Do you have my mushrooms, <name>? Have you been to the cave?

Completion

Many thanks, <name>. These mushrooms are fine specimens!

And when you were at Cliffspring Falls, did you find anything to confirm the warnings of the Ancients?

The Ancients are wise, but I had hoped that, this time, they were wrong.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 125 experience (7 50 at max. level)
  • 250 Reputation with Darnassus

At the very east side of the Cliffspring River (55,34), is a cave occupied by Naga. The Saber Stalk and Death Cap can be found inside. Be warned though: This area is very dangerous! Even at level 16-17 you can find yourself in serious trouble if you aren't careful...

If your soloing this quest it's easier to go to the right after you enter the cave. There are two death caps up there and only a couple of naga. If your careful they are easily single pulled. The other mushrooms respawn fast so you won't have to go very far into the cave.

The Scaber Stalks are pretty easy to get, but the Death Cap is what makes this quest hard. They are buried deep in the cave and you'll have to fight your way back there. Also be as quick as possible since the MOBs spawn VERY QUICKLY!!!

This quest is not hard, but can be if you get careless. Your best course of action, due to the faster spawn times, is to take your time and have your Hearthstone ready when you complete. Otherwise you'll be killing your way out.

If you're lucky, you'll get the Death Cap on the upper floor as apposed to inside the cavern deeps.

Warning!: Unless you are sure of yourself and your skill/level, do not attempt to kill the Twilight Thugs. The drop rate for the quest giving book is extremely low. ""IF"" you decide to take them on, your best bet is to use some immoblizing effect on one of the Twilight Thugs and Nuke the caster/healer. You may die at this point. Run back as quickly as possible, immobilize the lower of the two Twilight Thugs and Nuke the other. You 'MAY' die again (this is why it's not worth it to me). Run back quickly, kill the last, hope the healer doesen't respawn, because you 'MAY' die again! If the Twilight Thugs are orange to you, don't even try. I suggest not trying unless at least one of them (probably the healer) is green. (This is based on a Rogue's perspective and may change with other classes.)

Herbalists can use the ""Find Herbs"" ability to track both mushrooms needed on the minimap. Zoom in and mouseover, it makes it a bit easier.

Hunters are somewhat different, at lvl10 they got pet (which on that low level is much tougher even than a Warlocks WV) and with Mend Pet they are able to solo easily most of the quests, even harder ones (one man army - a tank pet, Mend Pet healer and a dpser which ranged skills).

The mobs inside cave ARE hard. Either warriors, which are doing quite a bit damage and cast some sort of spell that knocks you back, interrupting action and, if you are really unlucky, dropping you down to 100% death. Priestes on the other hand casts Smite dealing about 40 holy dmg and when low on hp, heal (that is giving them 100% health back). Add to that big density of mobs there and that Nagas will try to flee, bringing more and more adds (and don`t forget about one or two patrols) and you will get one small hell.

I done this quest 3 times and each time I was able to solo it by going right way (tho at the end I always ended up fighting 2 mobs). However, today (when I was doing this as a 15lvl druid) there was no Death Cap on right side (I figured it out after 20minutes of fight and 2 deaths...). 1 hour later I returned there with a 3 man party and somehow we menaged to get to the Mushrooms (3 of them) located below. However, that way is close to imposible (if not impossible for most classes) to solo due to numerours Nagas and the Twilight Thugs.

In short words - you can try to solo it going the right way BUT if there are no Mushroom, either get a party, a hight level (20 or so) or forget about it.

This quest is EXREAMLY annoying, I simply ignored it on my warlock, I barely managed it on my druid. The nagas hit alot for the lvl, and they got a big aggro range

I found 2 Death Caps on upper level next chest. So its really easy task.
Before i tried to get Death caps from bottom level and died 3 times. Im 22 lvl Paladin, but 2 rogues and 1 caster together killed me.

As a rogue, you can do this without having to kill anything. They all run and its hard to pull 'em. So, stealth next to the mushrooms, wait for the roving one to pass, SAP the one closest to the mushroom, get the mushroom, then stealth again. And go right. I actually stealthed my way into the back and got the deathcap first, then came down for the others.

Sap rank 1 is for 25 seconds, and the cooldown on Stealth is 10 seconds and the getting the mushrooms themselves is about 5 seconds which you can do while your stealth is cooling down.

Great quest for a rogue to do solo.

I got the death cap just by sending the hunter's pet in at the twilights, looting the mushroom while in combat, and dieing save. (lvl 15). Guess this is why it's called a death cap, i died 5 times trieing to solo those 3 mobs....

yea again, if your a rouge any level you can sap the orc and quickly get the death cap, but run like hell after you get it and get as close to the entrance as you can.

Ugh.

I cleared all the way to one of the back rooms in this cave to get my death cap, and once I got there it was guarded not only by a Naga Siren, but also two Dark Dwarfs. Needless to say I got wtfpwned and threw my keyboard across the room, given the amount of time I spent clearing. No one else seems to have commented on this, so I suppose it must be rare, but I was absolutely in the right cave, and collecting Scaber Stalks as I cleared. GL.

I soloed the entire cave, including the twilight thugs + siren, as a lvl 16 hunter (who hasn't trained since lvl 12). With a pet of course, and survival specced, but I didn't really have any trouble.

Might be harder if you aren't drenai... I used gift of the naru when taking on the 2 twilight thugs + siren... would probably have been pretty close if I hadn't done that... with the extra healing, didn't have any trouble at all.

This quest is pretty awful. I couldn't find any Death caps on the right path, so I had to go all the way in. Level 17 mage, solo, so it was quite unpleasant. However, I took my time, and the respawn times weren't too ridiculous. Made it to the end of the cave only to discover two Twilight Thugs. Lovely. I just cleared the area of nagas, ran into the Twilight Thugs, used Frost Nova, and looted the Death cap as quickly as I could. It was cheap, but there was no way for me to solo this quest otherwise. :(

Seriously, bring a party for this, or be a hunter.

I think this is the hardest quest I 've ever done.

edit: i died 2 times deep in the cave. Now I figured that the death cap is on the right.. It's much easier this way.

It's possible that they've removed the Death Caps from the path to the right. They were not there for at least 40 minutes while I worked on this quest. No one else was around.

For any of you lvl 14-16 priests thinking about just running in and doing this quest... don't. Save yourself the repairs, keep any small children who live within 5 miles of you from hearing words they shouldn't, and keep most of your sanity by bringing a group, because I can give you my word if you are a lvl 14 priest... This is not soloable by any stretch of the imagination. I sat on the right side of that cave for a hour hoping the death cap would spawn, and finally, after a HOUR, tried to go down the rest of the cave and just... don't. This quest is most definitely a group quest. Assuming you somehow manage to make it to the Thugs with all the mobs running around and the Siren's healing, you can't solo the two lvl 17 mobs with their little healer reversing any headway you were making.

Group quest. End of story.

F#%&amp; you Blizz.

Secret to this crap quest? two words.. CORPSE WALKING. Did it solo with a 17 fury warrior by going in, collecting mushroom while being beat on then getting as close to next one as I could and then when I died (and you will die) walked back to my body got ahead as close to next mushroom, res'd and collected. May take you a couple clicks to not get interrupted but the nagas do give you enough time in most cases. The casting nagas have a large aggro area so it is almost impossible to go anywhere without aggroing one of them.

Had no problem finding death caps, right is still the safest (relatively) and being an herbalist definitely helps.

This was an extremely difficult quest for me as a level 17 druid. I did manage to solo the quest finally, after many deaths and armor repairs. And like somebody's earlier comment... it was a really good thing I was alone in the middle of the night so no one could hear all the horrible things I had to say about these guys. And to confirm the location of the death caps... they are inside on the top level to the right, look for an opening on the curve on the right. I also did as someone else mentioned... by running in and resurrecting at my body and grabbing a mushroom at every opportunity. I didn't even collect my loot from what I killed a time or two just so I could get a little further in. LOL... good luck on this one guys!

Soloed as 14lvl gnome warlock. Easy-mode.
Send in void(felguard) on deathshroom pack ( siren &amp; 2x thugs ).
When all pack gets aggro on ur pet, send him to random mob afar from you.
And, voila, while they are chasing your pet, loot freely, and then fast hs ( if ur lucky, or die and res ).
Fortunately, at lvl 14 res sickness is only 4 min.
