Magenta Fungus Cap (12)

Description

I've heard about a newly discovered plant called the magenta fungus caps. They grow in clusters at the Uldaman dig site and can be found in the early tunnels and deep within the less-explored areas. I want to study their potential use in alchemy, and that's where you come in.

Find the magenta cap clusters and bring me a dozen caps. Be warned, the clusters may spew out poison spores if jostled.

Do this for me, and I'll whip up a batch of one of my famous restorative elixirs for you!

Have you obtained the magenta fungus caps I need for my alchemical work? No caps - no reward!

Completion

Well done <name>, you've proven your worth once again! The caps will be an interesting study, yon verily!

And now, as promised, enjoy a taste of one of my more potent restorative brews from my personal stock...

This leads to a rescue quest. The actual thing you need to find is the southermost ""dot"" on this map: https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=7784 https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=7784. Make sure you have another person if you're around the level that this quest is designed for, several adds are spawned at once in some cases and as a 46 mage I cannot take four scorpids with 2500 health each at once.

Just 2 ambushes: three lvl 47 scropids in the start and three wastevander humans (1 mage, 2 assasins, around lvl 44) almost in the end. And some usual mobs chicken just cant get past on its way &gt;.&lt;
Soloed without much troubles as lvl 47 affliction warlock.
Picture at https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=7784 https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=7784 shows the way chicken follows.

All the magenta fungus cap nodes are outside of the Uldaman instance itself, but inside the indoors part that you enter from the Master's Terrace. The caps are usually in corners, behind tents, and most importantly, away from mobs.

The turn-in for each step of the quest is 250 reputation with Ironforge or Orgrimmar, as of patch 2.0.1, and if you're an alchemist, you get an additional quest, ""Badlands Reagent Run II,"" which involves killing scorched guardian dragons in the badlands, upon completion of which you receive the recipe for the Restorative Potion.

I'm going to post this message on all three of these ""Find"" quests, just in case someone doesn't see it on one of the other two.

If you plan to do these quests in a group (which is very helpful, as any escort quest) everyone must first have completed the ""Find"" part of the quest, which means you have to find the chicken, choose ""Complete"" and then be *offered* the next part of the quest, which is the actual escort part. But do not accept this part until everyone has done the ""Find"" part, otherwise it won't be offered to them as escort quests normally are, because technically you are not on the same stage of the quest yet.

So just complete the ""Find"" part, then when the next part is offered, decline it until everyone is ready to accept it.

On a side note. Keep in mind how many you have gathered. It is - so far - possible to collect more than the required amount. I was able to get 3 caps from one click. I had extra after turning in the quest. If you don't keep track. You could possibly carry them around and then not remember what they were for.

Also, I did get a poison/disease from picking them. I am not sure what it was. I was running with a group at the time, and time was limited to picking and charging in.

I done this quest as a lvl 43 prot (AoE) pally, it took two attempts. The first time the chicken died when i bubbled against the Mage and the 2 assassins because he pulled all the agro. I healed and ruined their day (but really they had already ruined mine!). Anyway, next time i got through with no problems. Tactics: I killed the scopids pally AoE style (BoSanc, Ret Aura, SoLight, holy shield). I consecrated to pull any agro off the chicken. (remember we dont want him to die!) This was the toughest fight by far. I think i even used Lay on hands after some wolf joined in. I killed everything slowly from then on so that my health and mana kept going up, BoWis, SoL does it for pallys. I changed to Prot Aura too for the chicken! Keep an eye on the chickens health; take as much beating as you need to so that he has time to heal. You can always take a potion or bandage. (I couldnt heal the chicken). I switched to Shadow res Aura before i got to the mage and Co. Killed mage first, pulled the agro from the chicken with consecration. Then went back to pally AoE again to finish off the assassins. They dual wield so happy days. (The chicken doesnt take well to dual wielders though!) He died quick the first time! There was no other trouble. Sorry this is really only a pally guide....
The longest part of this was finding the chicken! Which got me killed once but the second time i pulled a lvl 50 basilisk and half way through that i pulled another lvl 50 giant bug that dropped critters. (they died on my BoSanc though! lol) I survived it though but the fight took so long the basilisk had disappeared (and i couldnt loot it!) by the time I had finished off the bug! (really what happens is that you try and keep your health up (Jol Sol) while holy damage (ret Aura, BoSanc, Shield spike) slowly kills them!)

I soloed this quest as lvl46 hunter without any problem. Just stay behind a chicken a bit, when he aggroes, attack one mob after another with your pet, so your pet will take aggro for all three mobs attacking chicken. After that, just use mend pet on your pet, chicken will help you, throw few arcane shots on them and you're done.

Pain attention if you are a mage to aggro on you...
So don't use frost nova, expecially when attacked by groups of 3.
If you don't aggro on you, the chicken aggro on him and you fail the quest because the chicken dies.
Blizzard &amp; Ice Barrier/Mana Shield are welcome when facing the groups of 3.

Don't know if it was just one of those days, but of all the times I have done this quest, the one I just completed a minute ago took by far the longest.

There seemed to be 2-3 times as many mobs on the route back, the chicken aggro'd everything in sight let alone range.

Would like to hear some more reports of doing this after 2.3

This little bugger runs right infront of Caverns of Time. I tried to do this but every time I bump into high-level hordes who find it funny to ruin my questing. Just a notice, everyone should be careful while doing this. I'd suggest doing it when it's not prime-time for players so that you might be able to avoid any high-level gankers.

Solo'd this the other day as a 48 SPriest. Instead of fearing ambushers for the escort quests, I usually try to find a different way.

The first group I thought would be like the previous groups I ran into, and come from a distance, so I mounted and scorpions spawn in a circle surrounding the chicken, and immediately start attacking. Throw dots, attacks, or get some kind of aggro from all of them, and just focus on the one he's focused on. For reference, I found my chicken was able to stay alive for at least 25 or so seconds, easily with one scorpion and poison on him. If you're a lower level, don't attack the mob that the chicken is focused on, take 2 off of him, and take the 3rd when you've finished one, the chicken should survive comfortably, as should you.

The chicken ran past or into several mobs on the way, before, after, and in between ambushes. I didn't find these happening too terribly often, every 20-30 seconds of dead time. I just join him in the fight, these are typically single mobs, I got occasional doubles.

The second group does approach from a distance, so I was able to mount and kite them, just running through, and then past the group. The mage was only able to cast on me once, and the melees got 2 attacks per? After seeing this was quite possible, I dropped mount and engaged. I threw dots on the assassin's, and then just focused on the mage, they dropped with no fuss.

A few helpful things to remember, I wasn't able to buff or heal the chicken whatsoever, but within 10 seconds of leaving combat, that cheesy NPC regen kicks in, and he's full in 2 ticks. If his health is really low, and he's walking directly towards a mob, simply go to the side of the path, and pull the mob yourself, keeping it out of the chicken's aggro range, he'll walk right past, and you can finish the mob yourself. Also, bandages are extremely helpful, just remember that they can be interrupted easily, wait until the scorpids' poison wears off before you bandage, or you'll have a minute to wait to try again =P Hope this helps. 5450 XP

Edited for typos and the like.

Just did, as 56 resto druid. The first time, unfortunately, as we got to the scorpid spawn point, we also had a hyena, another scorpid, and a basilisk on us. Six beasts is a bit tough, and we both died. But on the way back to retrieve my corpse, I found the three spawned scorpids still there. After rezzing, I took care of them, plus the other nearby scorpid. Then I went back and restarted the escort. When we got back to the scorpid spawn point, no scorpids!

The last ambush was three wastewanderers, one a caster. Focus on him, and the other two will go down fast. Also had a rogue wasterwanderer aggro on us at the end. I swear, we had probably another 20 mobs on us at one time or another. Stupid chicken! :D

The chicken seems to aggro beasts from a mile away, and you can't buff him. Keep an eye out!

Just a small hint: make sure you let the mobs that aren't part of the ambushing plan (so the mobs the chicken runs into) attack the chicken first. So don't go clear the path, because then you risk the chicken getting more aggro, because he won't stop walking if just YOU engage combat. I made this mistake and got an ambush of 4 scorpids and a land rager instead of the 3 scorpids. Fail.

For most of the mobs, you can mount and kite them out of the path of the chicken; you don't even have to kill them, if you make a big loop you'll get far enough ahead and leave combat.

So neither you nor the chicken will have to engage, except for possibly the ambush groups. If you fail the quest at one fo the groups, that one will also stick around and be available for kiting.

Tried to do this quest today, 1 Dec 2008 with my lvl 46 feral druid.

When I have done this quest before with other characters, it has been soloable with a little effort. Well.. no more by the looks of things.

This is because in addition to the chicken pulling random mobs on the way plus having some scripted mobs spawn on it (which isn't particularly difficult to handle), it also runs past one of the Wastewander camps (the one closest to the beach) and aggroes pretty much everything there. Since the camp mostly consisted of https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=5617 Wastewander Shadow Mages who hit pretty hard with their shadow bolts and have voidwalker minions on top of that, AND who flee when on low health (pulling a few more mobs - hey, the more the merrier, right? :P), try as I might I could not kill them, not even take the aggro off the chicken before the chicken was dead. It seemed to take about 4 shadow bolts and a few hits from the meleers to kill the chicken.

I guess I was a little slow reacting, might have been able to heal the chicken or do something else, but.. I really don't understand why it is necessary to let the chicken run past that camp so so close. Was it really just my bad luck?

One way to get past this, I suppose, would be to ride in pulling the camp myself, but about 2-3 shadow-bolting mobs on me does not sound particularly appealing, and if I get knocked off my mount, it can hurt. A lot. Can't clear the camp long beforehand either, since the mobs seem to respawn pretty quickly.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Original: Very easy, yet up there on the list of terrible quests. I dread this one every time and not quite sure why... lol

Edit: I now remember why I hate it so much...
1) Can't help the stupid chicken (Heal, Buff, etc...)
2) As stated, the chicken is an effing tard that pulls everything cuz hes only lvl 42, and he deserves every failure he gets out of this quest.
3) As a pally doing this quest, it wasnt hard. That is untill he runs along the damn beach and pulls about 6 people, half of which throw shadow bolts around for about 200. Thought SR Aura would solve that... nope. Damn bird doesnt get buffs! How could i forget that?
4) Ummm... the 100s of scorpions he pulls poison the hell out of him and you cant dispel them. The poisons end as soon as he leaves combat, but still... hes in combat for 4 mins straight cuz he attracts sheit like an overpowered magnet on steroids.

And the absolute worst part... at the end, after you go through all that hell, HE TURNS ON HIS CLOAKING DEVICE TO GET TO BOOTY BAY! Where the hell did that come from? I was so ^&amp;*!ed! He couldnt take the wussy rogue style way out from the start? Ugh.. Dumbass poultry..
I will never become a vegetarian... We need to wipe this species off the planet. A bird that cant fly? It cant even swim or run! *sigh* maybe one day....

i solo'd this quest at 48 with a retri pala with some epic gear and had level 80 priest buffs.
Everything was going fine until i came a cross 3 scorpids who jumped in and attacked me and the chicken. I layed down AoE and then another 2 hyenas decided to attack so i took the threat off the chicken and managed to kill all five creatures exhausting mana but only getting taken down to quarter health. I think this was the most tense part of the whole quest.
If i didnt have buffs i dont think i would have completed the quest. easiest way to complete is to walk infront of chicken and kill all mobs which are in the path of the chicken.
good luck guys and have fun ^^
