Power in Uldaman

Retrieve an Obsidian Power Source and bring it to Tabetha in Dustwallow Marsh.
Obsidian Power Source

Description

Now that the demon has been removed, we must gain a power source. Unfortunately, the best power sources are usually the oldest and the hardest to get. It's neat how fate likes to take a bite out of you sometimes, isn't it?

So you're going to need to go to Uldaman and defeat the obsidian sentinel there. He's big, he's tough, and his power source packs a punch!

I wish you the best of luck, <name>. And if you don't get lucky then, well... it was nice knowing you.

Progress

Have you been to Uldaman, <name>? Did you defeat the obsidian sentinel?

Completion

You did it? Well done!

I was chatting with some of my colleagues and when your name came up they said, "You know that <name> sure works well under stress!"

But when I told them I sent you to Uldaman against the obsidian sentinel, they said I was crazy! They said, "Tabetha, you're crazy! There's no way <name> could take on that sentinel!"

And I said, "We'll see," and then they said "Yeah, we'll see..."

Well we sure showed them, didn't we!

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 390 experience (23 40 at max. level)

You can get the Power Source from killing the Obsidian Sentinel right at the Uldaman Backdoor(67,44)

The obsidian sentinel is a level 42 elite. He summons, at 75%, 50%, 25%, obsidian shardlings. This does 2 things, first, his damage goes down by 60 for each shard, he grows smaller, and both he and the shard have reflect magic up for as long as the shard is up. AOE down the shard, then focus dps on the sentinel. Soloing this is a royal bitch, i kid you not. At level 38 I'm still figuring out how to deal with him. I'm going to try wanding him down to the quarter marks(to conserve mana). His damage debuff stacks to 4 and persists even after you reset the encounter(by zoning out).

And yes, i'm insane. I enjoy a challenge :)

He reflects fire and frost spells sometimes, the same goes for the adds.

Anyone been able to solo one of these yett ?

After each shrink he does remarkable less dmg, when he's a his smallest he does 1 dmg which makes your mana regen higher than the 2 mana drainer by your shield.

Only use aoe spells like CoC, Arcane Explosion, frost nova, blast wave and flamestrike.

Did this as a 39 fire mage. I firstly made him grow smaller, reducing his damage by using AoE spells and wanding, then when he summons a shardling, run out of the instance, back in, wait for the shardling to despawn, and repeat. When he's at his smallest (detect magic, he should have 4 debuffs), wand him with mana shield active and when he summons an add, simply frost nova, use aoe spells (Flamestrike in my case, AE, CoC, Blast Wave) and repeat wanding him with mana shield, and use some mana pots/jades and/or evocation if you really need to. Just takes some patience

I solo'd him as level 48 fire mage. I mana shielded, wanded him until shard appeared, then wanded the shard. All the time keeping my mana shield active. Once the shard was dead, I went back to the sentinel. I repeated this all the way until he was dead. I never to replenish my mana, only my health for the times when my mana shield ran out. I tried pyroblasting him, arcane missiles etc, but I only ended up killing myself as the damage was reflected. The wand/mana shield combination is remarkable effective.

Another technique that works well is first splintering him down to his smallest size. You may have to zone out the first few times because he hits relatively hard. At his smallest point he averages 15 damage (To a 48 Mage). Wanding him down until he summons the shardling will conserve enough of your mana for the entire fight. To take care of the Shardlings simply frost nova then Arcane blast two or three times. Switch back to your wand until the next shard appears, rinse, repeat, and you shouldn't have much trouble. The spells he seems to reflect the most are any bolt spell, I never once had any damage reflected from the Arcane Blasts.

Yeah, it's possible as an lvl 39 fire mage.. But I would recommend bringing a partner unless you want to fight for 15 minutes against one boss and using pretty much evrything you've got to survive. Just take him piece by piece, once you got him to splinter, leave instance. Heal and come back.

Just completed this today as a moderately geared 36 frost mage. With him being six levels higher than me it was very difficult to hit him even with Elemental Precision (Resist chance -3%) The boss will splinter off and create adds every 20% damage he takes, when he does this his melee damage drops dramatically though. Each splinter seems to drop his damage by about 20% or so down to around 10-40 or so once fully debuffed. The first splinter was the most difficult to pull off as he starts off the fight hitting like a freight train hitting a stalled bus full of orphans, nuns and puppies (about 300-400 on cloth... ouch.)

Like everyone else has said, start off the fight at max range, put up the mana shield and frost / fire ward then nuke him as hard as possible before he can get to you. (May need to run out if first fire/ice-bolt is resisted or reflected.) Once he's down to 80% he'll shard and spawn the add... I had to run out at this point as it took everything I had to just drop him 20% the first time. Then with each set of adds I would blizzard at max range then frost nova, cone of cold, arcane explosion them down and run for the exit again.

This got much easier as the splinter debuffs stacked and even reduced the numbers of attempts taken to splinter him again. Once he was fully debuffed I got to start the long part of wanding him to death. This was remakably easy to do, even at 36, by just keeping mana shield up and wanding him down. He will still spawn his adds every 20%, but they are easy to deal with by just frost novaing, then CoC &amp; Arcane Explosion til dead. I had Gift of the Naaru to heal myself, and for a mage it's pretty much a full heal every 3 minutes, and evocated twice to keep my mana up.

All in all this process took me about an hour. Probably woulda been smarter to get somebody to help me, but this way does work too.

Thx for this tip, i solo'd him at lvl 42, frost spec.
Just Frostbolt until he spawns a little golem, then frost nova and CoC and AE till the little golem is dead.
This works perfectly with ice barrier, since it's not as mana expensive as Mana Shield.
With 4 Debuffs stacked he just did 1 dmg per hit to me, which is easy to absorb.
Then just wand him down, it's quite a joke.

Really, big THX for the tips :D

This strategy worked great. At 47 I figured I wasn't going to be doing this quest; was sort of past Uldaman. Saw this, and gotta say it was perfect. Took several tries before the initial Pyroblast hit (don't forget Fire Ward!) and had to zone him once after 2 shardlings were down. I can imagine it being a lot easier as a frost mage, what with their greater slows/roots.

As of 2.4.2, the strategy above still works.

I just soloed this as Level 41 Fire mage. It took about 30 minutes and 2 deaths (by my own Pyroblast &gt;_&lt;... Yes, they can reflect spells) to get it done.

P.S: Excellent way to lvl up your wand skill.

This is how he works:

1. He reflects all of the spells that are not AoE.
2. When you hit him at a certain % he summons a shardling which puts a debuff that makes him smaller and weaker.
note: the debuff will stay even if you zone out.
note: the shardlings also reflect spells.

Strategy:

1. This works for 2.4 as well, ive tried it. You need to make him spawn his first shardling, use your aoe spells, once this first shardling is up, zone out.

2. Zone in, kill the shardling with your wand (or aoe with the boss), use your wand with mana shield to make him spawn another shardling, zone out.
note: you may want to frost nova him.

At this point the boss should have 2 debuffs on him.

3. Zone back in AoE kill the shardling + boss, Wand him to death, you're done. :D !

note: mana shield should always be up when you're proceeding. !

Just don't wand him while you regen mana so shards don't spawn if you aren't going to have enough mana to kill it.

Also I recommend turning off mana shield before the add spawns, drains a ton of mana with it's hits you can lose the health easier.

I just wanted to post to confirm that the above strategies still work. I just did this solo as a 40 Frost Mage with no problems. I did kill myself once because I tried to use Frostbolt to finish off an add at low health and had it reflect back at me. On the second attempt though I just kept up Frost Ward and Ice Barrier, skip Mana Shield burns too much mana, and burned him down til an add spawned. Then ran out, ran back in til he had 4 debuffs and used aoe spells/wand to burn him just like listed above. Worked perfectly. Thanks to all the above posters.

Great strategies.. a few pointers for the modern user...

1 a glyph of evocation works well, get 4 debuffs manasheild/ ice barrier and healyourself

2 engineering, use explosives and compact harvest reaper... Two can play at the gardian game!

I think I'm missing something with the run out/in/wait for adds to despawn strategy. When you run out/in his health resets back to ful and create new shards again. So how can this strategy work?

Solo'ed as 43 frost mage no zoning necessary, just kite, aoe as usual :)

Note: He doesnt reflect everytime i got a few frostbolt crits on him that helped, use at your own risk.

Soloed as a level 41 fire mage (one point in frost for frostbite). The advice and strat work as described. I died twice as a result of my own pyro/fireblast.

When the shard is not present he does not reflect. More or less inadvertently I burned him to 4 debuffs before I got the strat sorted out. Initially I did too little damage to him so that when I finally had 4 debuffs on him he was at full health when I reentered the instance for the last time. However after that the key was to only kill things by wanding and reserve mana for mana shield and CC. When a shard spawned I FN'd them both and killed the shard with the wand. Then returned to wanding the sentinel. I ended up using the mana jade, evo, and a mana pot (and a bandage) but in the end he fell. It was important to take advantage of his getting locked in place by frostbite off the ice armor to pot, evo or bandage because mana was pretty low most of the time.

Thanks for posting all this information here, it is very helpful. Solo'd this on 41 mage. the hardest part is getting to the first splinter, it gets progressively easier after that.

To complete this quest you have to enter the Uldaman instance. Many of the comments here are helpful, however by stating that the quest site is ""outside of Uldaman's back door"" (which is correct) many may be led to believe that the NPC is located outside of the instance, which is incorrect. You DO in fact have to enter the cave noted in my screenshots. You then click on the door that you encounter upon entering the instance and the NPC is right there. He is an elite and spawns a few non elite adds. The quest is turned in to the quest giver in Dustwallow Marsh.Best of luck.

Quest appears to have been removed in the latest patch. My 39 mage has the power source in her possession, but Tabetha doesn't accept it nor offer me the quest again. It's vanished from my log.

I can verify that Tabetha no longer offers this quest. I completed the 3 proceeding quests and then didn't feel like going to Uldaman so quit there. On coming back to pick up Uldaman quests while working on Loremaster post Patch 4.0.1 Tabetha just tells me ""Your errand must mean much, mage, to draw you so deep into the marsh...""
