Description

Araj the Summoner lords over Andorhal from the ruined city's heart. We know that he was the former leader of Scholomance before claiming the city as his own. To finish the key, we will need his signet - called a scarab - mounted as the head of the key.

Make your way into the heart of Andorhal, and break his hold on the city now that he is drawn into the open. Once destroyed, seize his scarab from his fallen phylactery!

The Key to Scholomance awaits, <name>!

Progress

You've come this far <name> - only the destruction of the physical form of Araj the Summoner will provide us with the means to finish the key. Get Araj's scarab, by hook or by crook, and bring it to me - I will fuse it on as the head of the key.

Yes, this is it! I... again, I'm absolutely amazed at the depths of your cunning and bravery. It simply boggles the mind the lengths you are willing to go in order achieve victory.

Allow me now to play my small part in this. I've prepared a special solvent that should allow me to secure the scarab on as the head of the key, infusing it with the power to breech the locked door of Scholomance.

It is possible to kill Araj and loot the scarab before all of her guards are downed. If you have a hunter or mages in your group the crowd control for the guards should be okay.

You will need to separate Araj from the mass of guards and hack it up. Most of the time i've seen a hunter pull her away while mages frost/slow the guards. A VW aoe taunt is also nice to keep the guards focused while Araj is taken down.

If you kill Araj but die in the process you can easily run back, res yourself, and loot araj for scarab before respawn.

If you pull the front undead (east side), it won't aggro Araj. With fewer guards around him, Araj will be a little easier to bring down.

Confirmed. Just beat the crap out of him as a solo level 62 prot pallie. He is still elite as of 2.3, although the https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=12650 Attuned Dampener used to help kill him has been greatly upgraded. First off, make sure you do the prequest, https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=4972 Counting Out Time, before you fight him, in order to get the Attuned Dampener. Using that will make him much easier.

Second, make sure you come into Andorhal through Sorrow Hill and over the bridge. Clear the area of solo mobs, and watch out for the Flesh Reapers on patrol, they're elites. It's a good idea to kill any of those in the immediate area.

Now start carefully pulling mobs from around Araj. You can pull not only the first group in front of him, but also the 2 spectral ghosts behind them, and if you go around to the side, the scorching ghouls and skeletal warlords as well. It isn't difficult at all to completely clear the area around him.

After he's clear, stand about 10 yards away and use the Attuned Dampener. From there on, keep yourself healed and he's cake. Pallies should know what to drop on him. Consecration, Exorcism, etc. Keep a mana potion handy just in case.

At any rate, rumors of his difficulty are greatly exaggerated.

This quest can be done like the Sons of Gruul- I got a party together to kill Araj, but someone else had literally just killed him (the bodies were still out) and the phylactery was out and I was able to loot it.

Very anticlimactic.

To get the item from Araj, you basically need to:
  1. Kill him (https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=1852 Araj the Summoner).
  2. Loot the object (https://vanillawowdb.com/?object=177241 Araj's Phylactery) he spawns on his death.
  3. You are done!
Quick info
Now to do this might be a little tricky if you are alone, now he is supposed to be a 2 man (or higher) ""boss"". Luckly you can solo him as a ranged class! With some DPS and smart use of enviroment you can solo him without a problem (at least no problem for a Frost Mage, probably Fire too :P)

We just killed it.. come from the bridge, clear the 2 pack in front of him then you can solo pull him.. we were 58 prot pally and 56 wari.. We jumped down to that house on the screenshoot in the post above.. worked prefefctly...

as has been noted on some other quests related to araj, if you have a higher level character you can log your lowbie off near araj, kill araj with your main, and log your alt back on to loot the phylactery that spawns

You may loot the quest items from Araj Phylactery even if he had been killed by a player of opposite faction.

If you are taking the time to do this questline, don't forget to do https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=105 [Alas, Andorhal] at the same time - who wants to have to kill this guy twice, right (like I had to do). Like others have recommended, strongly suggest clearing ALL the adds.
