The Killing Fields

Farmer Saldean wants you to kill 20 Harvest Watchers.
  •
Harvest Watcher slain (20)

Description

Look at what has happened to this place! These lands were once occupied by good farm folk. But the damned thieves have driven them all off. Not me, though! But it seems some Harvest Watchers have taken over the fields.

If you're up for the work, I'd like you to go out and kill twenty of them. Come back when you're done for your pay. If you finish up with the ones in my field, clear them from the neighboring fields as well.

Reward

You can choose one of these awards:
Harvester's Pants
Harvester's Robe

Progress

Ah, I see you're back! I hope you've been hard at work clearing those fields of those Harvest Watchers. Have you killed twenty yet?

Completion

Good work, friend. You have earned your pay well. Who knows, perhaps Westfall will prosper once again.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 105 experience (6 30 at max. level)
  • 250 Reputation with Stormwind

You can actually complete these quests at quite a low level as a hunter. You don't need to fight the groups that show up.

I found that when the chicken says ""Incoming threat detected"" or whatever it says, if you plant a frost trap infront of it, multi-shot the 3 incoming enemies, have them activate the trap, the chicken keeps running and you run with him, you can either keep planting forst traps as you walk to stop them catchign you, or leave your pet behind for them to attack.

I do the second, my pet is auto-dismissed for being out of range long before he dies.

Relatively easy quest, especially for an escort quest. There are two groups of mobs that are spawned. The first is three Wildkin and the second is three trolls.

The most difficult part about this quest is that there are quite a few horde in the area where the quest ends so it's very easy to get ganked right before you are finished.

I'm going to post this message on all three of these ""Find"" quests, just in case someone doesn't see it on one of the other two.

If you plan to do these quests in a group (which is very helpful, as any escort quest) everyone must first have completed the ""Find"" part of the quest, which means you have to find the chicken, choose ""Complete"" and then be *offered* the next part of the quest, which is the actual escort part. But do not accept this part until everyone has done the ""Find"" part, otherwise it won't be offered to them as escort quests normally are, because technically you are not on the same stage of the quest yet.

So just complete the ""Find"" part, then when the next part is offered, decline it until everyone is ready to accept it.

The area immediately in front of Farmer Saldean seems to be quite a grinding hotspot for appropriate level characters -- I've often had to compete with several players for Harvest Watchers (pure hell on my Rogue, what with everyone playing ezmode ranged pet classes). Thankfully, there's several fields in addition to the one where Farmer Saldean is that you can find Harvest Watchers. If you're having problems getting enough Watchers to kill, try branching out a little, and maybe doing more than one quest at once.

A very nice spawn of harvest watchers is at Alexston Farmstead (38,52), southwest of Saldean's Farm. This place has a relatively fast spawn, and you should be able to finish this quest in under 10 minutes there.

You should keep at least 5 flasks of oil that you get as drops from these harvest watchers as you can use them later for this quest:

This Quest is very easy for priests.

The Robot is going to run along the road and then down to the shoreline
at 78.68, just follow him as a usual escort quest and take out any random mobs
who attacks him, then when the first encounter comes and he says
""anomaly detected.."" just run ahead of him and you will see 3 Wildkin
walking towards you along the road. Just Psychic Scream them before they aggro
the robot and keep running, they will give up chase after awhile.
Rinse and repeat with the 3 trolls at the second encounter.

I guess this can be done by all classes in different ways as long as the robot don't get aggro, he is lvl42 and quite weak.

Warlocks attempting to do this quest are probably better off using the imp rather than the voidwalker, as the Harvest Watchers are immune to the voidwalker's Torment ability, making him a rather useless big blue lump. At least the imp will provide you with a bit of extra stamina.

As a low level Rogue, I soloed this quest, in the process I also did these quests which coincide with ""The Killing Field quest ""Forgotten Heirloom"" (you pick up on the side of the rode on your way to Sentinel Hill) ""Poor Old Blanchy"" (same place I picked up Forgotten Heirloom) ""Red Leather Bandannas"" (Cords 44,68) and ""The Peoples Militia"" (Cords 37,38) also you can get most of your Items for ""West fall Stew"" around there. I just traveled back and forth from the Furlbrow's pumpkin farm to the Jansen Stead to get my red bandannas . BTW after I finished all those quests I had to pay a fair amount for my armor repair.

This quest can turn out to be annoying as heck for a prot pally, because you'll burn a lot of mana on the two groups of three if you fight, and the little bugger moves too fast for you to drink your mana back up before he gets out of range.

The chicken doesn't stop to fight the mobs so be careful. When I did this the first time I didn't notice he kept going so I failed the quest. But the odd thing was, when I did it the second time, the owlbeasts you run into first, didn't show up. It's like I'd killed them and they stayed dead. Anyway so I just took out the trolls and completed the quest. Simple stuff really.

I thought it was worth it to mention that you apparently can't heal the chicken. So when the mobs spawn (it gives you fair warning before they get too close), make sure you (or for you hunters and warlocks out there, your pets or minions) pull aggro before the chicken gets too close, otherwise it dies rather easily and you'll have to start over again.

This quest can be a little tricky, but I soloed it on my first try with a 48 druid. The chicken is really weak and after a few hits it'll die, but as a bear it was easy to hold aggro and take down the three mobs with a few HoTs. Watch out for adds - I got a wolf on me when I was dealing with the trolls, and that almost screwed it all up. And also, be careful if you're going to fear the mobs, if the chicken is attacking the feared mob it will follow it into the woods and probably get you more adds.

Just a hint for rogues: When doing this quest keep well ahead of the chicken (but not too far or you'll fail the quest) so that when he stops and says his warning you can quickly stealth, distract the mobs that spawn and sap one of them. This way you only ever have to fight two at a time.

Normally the ambushes wouldn't be so bad but a level 48 stealthed wolf has decided to jump in everytime, making it more difficult than it needs to be. Ended up being a colossal waste of 2 superior health pots.

Tried to let the chicken walk past the ambushes, but just as he's walked through them and I think he's in the clear, they aggro him.

Before the fork in the road there will be a group of 3 owlbeasts. Before you go through the mountains you will have to go through 3 lvl 47 trolls as well.

I also had to kill 2 wolves that attacked us, however I can't remember whether they were random npcs on the path or whether they spawned from the quest itself.

I remember when I did this. When you are first walking to the island it helps to first kill a couple of the sludges ""walking"" around. This allows a much faster triip to where you can just keep running till you get to the ambushes.

also: OOX-09/HL distress beacon this ""HL"" means HinterLands
the same is with OOX-17/TN distress beacon this ""TN"" comes from TaNaris
and the other OOX-22/FE is about FElaras

I failed at the very end during the second mob. The three trolls weren't really a problem, but the couple of wolfs who jumped in were. He died, then my pet died, then me as I was desperately running away. Either way, I abandoned the quest cause I didnt know you could try again! Some @sshole who apparently had seen the whole thing but didn't decide to jump in and help told me if I failed it, it was gone for good. But some people are talking about doing it a second time and stuff, so I guess not? If I go back to the rock is he gonna be there for me to reaccept the quest, or do I have to start farming for another egg?

[Edit 3.27.09]
Today, about a month and 6 or 7 levels later, I saw TheR0nin's reply and decided to go back and redo the quest. Lol it's amazing how much of a difference those extra levels made... We blasted right through, no problems, and now I got myself a nice Gnomish Water Sinking Device to vend in Org. Thanks.

Is this quest repeatable?
Rating: +4 [-] [+]
By stillnotking on 02/03/2009 (Patch 3.0.8)
Nope, not repeatable. If you auction or (God forbid) vendor the mechanical chicken, it's gone, unless you ask a GM to replace it -- and I doubt they would replace it if you auctioned it.

Since the vanity pet achievements came out, these things sell for 1500+ at the auction house. Which isn't unreasonable, considering you have to have a level 45+ character and farm three distress beacons in order to get one (the escort quests themselves are pretty easy).

Edit: how to complete the chicken escort quests without dying and/or failing. I have done these on three characters now, which is why I said they are easy, but the first few times I did one it was a pain. First thing you need to know is that the chicken moves FAST, only slightly slower than player run speed, and if he gets far enough in front of you, he will despawn and you will fail. Second thing is that the chicken usually does NOT turn around to help you if you get attacked, unlike typical escort NPCs. The net effect of these issues is that you must always let the chicken aggro the enemies first, whether they are wandering monsters or spawned ambushers, otherwise it will run off into the sunset and leave you to deal with the mobs. Since the chicken is kinda wimpy, ideally you should pull aggro off it right away (though it can tank one mob for a while if you need to drink or bandage). Once you see it emote something like ""initializing attack plan beta"", start killing. AOEs are very helpful but not needed if you switch targets on the 3+ mob ambush spawns. The hardest part of all these quests is the final gnoll ambush in Feralas, which happens on the road down to the docks. One of the mobs is a shaman and must be killed IMMEDIATELY, before he starts healing the others. Make sure you are at close to full health/mana before the ambush occurs, otherwise it can be quite difficult. Stunning abilities are very helpful here.

As far as farming the beacons, in my experience the drop rate is completely random. Sometimes it comes from your first few kills in a zone, sometimes you can finish every single quest and still not get it. My recommendation is to make sure you plan on questing in these zones as you level up -- many players skip the Hinterlands, especially on the Horde side, because it's hard to get to and a long way from any cities (not to mention that the quest hub is in the far southeast corner of the zone, at the bottom of a cliff -- bleh). But the Hinterlands is worth doing just to finish this quest. 1500 gold at level 45-50ish is nothing to sneeze at. Save it for your epic flyer!

As of 3.2 this and other Rescue OOX- quests are now 3 times easier! With less than a quarter of the mobs encountered and an escort route cut to the road just south of where you begin.

Only one wave of 3 mobs is encountered, not including anything that pats nearby.

This quest, along with the other chicken rescue quests, has been shortened significantly in patch 3.2: After the first ambush pack has been defeated, the chicken will fly off and you will complete the quest. No more hikes through half of the Hinterlands, fending off multiple ambushes!
