Winterfall Intrusion

Additional requirements to obtain this quest:
Rivern Frostwind wants you to slay 5 Winterfall Shaman and 5 Winterfall Ursa.
  •
Winterfall Shaman slain (5)
  •
Winterfall Ursa slain (5)

Description

My presence goes unnoticed by most, <name>. However, there is an annoyance that seems firmly rooted here in Winterspring: the Winterfall furbolg.

Although I have never directly attacked the furbolg, they seem crazed, fearful of anything in their path. I have watched them slay countless creatures that had the misfortune to simply be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I am weary of their meddling -- please, help me by fighting back. Slay the furbolg and keep them away from Frostsaber Rock.

Progress

The furbolgs seem to suffer from such paranoia...

Completion

I am relieved to hear that for a short moment, we will not have to worry about the Winterfall intrusion.

You are beginning to show your perseverance, <name>.

Be prepared to do this quest over and over many times, and to be very frustrated with the people around you stealing your mobs.
I usually wait untill the slow hours untill setting foot there.

Once this particular quest becomes available, you can use it to your advantage to kill two birds with one stone.

Before you start killing the Winterfall Furbolgs, make certain you have done the Winterfall Activity quest. (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8464 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8464) Once you complete the quest, you will then be able to collect Winterfall Spirit Beads (https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=21383 https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=21383) for the Beads for Salfa quest (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8469 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8469).

This way, you shall be able to grind not only Wintersaber Trainer faction, but you can also grind Timbermaw faction as well with the bead turn-ins.

On a seperate note, if you are getting frustrated by the presence of people in or around the Winterfall camp, if they are of the same faction as yourself, try and see if you can get together in a single party. Unlike the meat drops, since you are farming for kill counts here, so long as as you are not in a raid every kill will count to the whole group.

However, if they are of the opposite faction there is one (maybe two) things you could do. First, you could either put up with them and try to tag mobs before they do. The second bit is a bit more evil and requires a lot of patience to get the ability to do this.

Just ignore the fact that it lists this as Horde only, this quest is available to both factions once they hit exalted with Timbermaw. It's called The Root of All Evil (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8481 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=8481). It gives you a torch that you can use to summon an elite demon to that cave north of the Winterfall Village. The demon will then try and lay waste to anyone who is unlucky enough to get close to it. He'll make short work of most farmers, but (and I'm not completely certain on this) until you complete, drop, or fail the quest itself (or maybe log out or leave the area?), he won't despawn.

Though there is another quest to kill giants once you're honored with the Wintersaber faction, this quest is your meat and potatoes on this terrible grind. One thing to take note of: shamans are the rare spawns on this quest. If i'm the only one farming the village (late late night :P) I try to keep the bottom and middle floor clear of denwatchers and ursas so that shamans have room to spawn. If you ride up the mountain overlooking the village, there is a whole ridge of Ursas, so you need to maintain a supply of shamans to keep the pace up.

There are 2 patrols that can spawn as shamans as well, on top of the ridge and in front of the village. If they aren't a shaman, they are a denwatcher, so just take it out and hope for a shaman spawn next time you come back from turning in.

The runners that come through the village do not aggro by proximity but they are social atleast to the chief, so be careful.

There are chests that spawn at both the houses on the edges of the upperlevel, and both the houses at the edge of the bottom level. I've pulled greens, blues, etc out of them, but usually get ores, bars, food, herbs, water, etc :P Some of the grinders I quested with completely ignored the chests to save time doing the quest; whatever floats your boat eh? : )

There is a named rare spawn thats also a good snag for greens; he spawns near the chief: https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=10199 https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=10199

When running back to the Quest NPC to turn this quest in, you want to have all your riding speed gear on and basically make a bee-line over the mountain ridges, avoiding mobs because they will knock you off your mount.

You can eventually get very fast at this quest, especially if you can maintain a spawn of shamans up. Grouping with people, whether or not they are doing the quest, can help a lot as well.

There used to be a bug where you would get credit for quest kills halfway across the map of winterspring, but that was fixed quite some time ago : P

250 rep / 275 for a human.

kill 10 npc. say thats 1 minute each so 10 minutes.
then you get to run back and forth to the trainer and the furbolgs. lets say a 5 minute round trip(with 75 riding skilll)

15 minutes given to each quest.(unless a lvl 60 with 75 riding wants to test this, no carrot, spurs,or glove enchant as not everybody will have any/all of those)

4 quests per hour. would have been hell at 50 rep per quest.

say you do this for 10 hours a day thats 40 a day. take just under 4 days to do it.(not accounting for the 1500 rep already needed to pick up this quest.

lvl 58s can pick up the meat quest which is prolly even longer since its not 100% drop rate. but you have to be 60 to pick up this one and the elites one.

Currently being 1010/12000 into honored here are my tips for this quest. You MUST be alliance to do these quests.

The https://vanillawowdb.com/?faction=589 Wintersaber Trainers are located in Northern Winterspring and pretty much the point of grinding reputation with them is solely to get https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=13086 Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber. Now, pre-BC this mount was extremely hard to get due to the little amount of reputation you would get per quest turn in thus the grind was highly not worth it. Since Burning Crusade came out the reputation has been increased however the mount is still uncommon since people don't find the worth of the grind.

To get started you must find https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=10618 Rivern Frostwind (Note: he is literally on top of the giant rock at (49,9). You can get up to him from the back of the rock).

Outline of the reputation levels:

[Neutral][Friendly][Honored][Revered][Exalted]Overview of the quests:Tips for farming:
  • It's always nice to have a friend. This is a really boring grind so it's nice to have someone to do it with.
  • https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=25653 Riding Crop or https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=32863 Skybreaker Whip are worth it for this grind
  • Except for the elites, you can pull a few of these a time as a 70 and be okay.
  • Once you hit honored and you unlock https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=5981 Rampaging Giants I would only do that and https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=5201 Winterfall Intrusion. The ride is longer but not having to farm the meat with the bad drop rate and the bonus repuation is worth it if you can take the elites.
  • Don't get discouraged. It seems like it's gonna take forever but it's not as bad as it seems. In one day I'm a bit into honored.
Some math:
Good luck all!

Having completed this grind now, I see a few missing details on the spawn points. Here is how the spawns really work so you can maximise shaman spawns. Basically, if it CAN spawn as a shaman, but it hasn't, kill it. There are plenty of guaranteed ursa up top. Waiting for shaman repops is very boring, you WILL have to wait fairly regularly if you don't do this and 'thinning' the herd is easy at 70.

Outside the wall: All den watchers except one. The exception can spawn as a shaman or a den watcher. This is the only one that roams and it will path across the road. Learn to recognize its path and kill it if appropriate.

Lower level: The ones around the huts can spawn as den watchers or shamans. So kill any den watchers that spawn here. There are a few well away from the huts, they only spawn as den watchers so you can ignore them.

Middle level: There are 7 spawn points here. They are either shaman or ursa, so kill any ursa that pop.

Cave: The chief and a shaman spawn here, and occasionally a rare spawn furbolg. Never anything else.

Hilltop level: These are always ursa except for one. The exception is either a den watcher or a shaman. The exception is also the only roamer up here and is generally easy to spot. Kill it if appropriate.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but I'd recommend that any shamans doing this grind set your hearth to Everlook and get a https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=43381 Glyph of Astral Recall. With the glyph you get a total of 10 hearths per hour including your hearthstone, which will obviously save you quite a bit of time in the long run.

This is truly a grind. Therefore, in the interest of efficiency, I clocked myself after receiving the Winterfall Intrusion quest and having some practice at making the runs.

It took me 23 minutes to complete both the Sabertooth Provisions and the Winterfall Intrusion quests roundtrip from Rivern Frostwind and back with a very short stop at Everlook (which you are right next to anyway after doing Winterfall) to clear out my inventory and do minor repairs at the armor repair shop.

It took me 11 minutes roundtrip (with no stop at Everlook) to go straight to Winterfall and complete that quest and run back to Rivern.

Moral of the story: some folks are saying to stop doing the provision quest once you get Winterfall Intrusion to be more efficient on time. However, this doesn't actually play out in reality. It will take you just as long if you concentrate on just Winterfall, and Winterfall is also often farmed, which means you may run into down time waiting for things to respawn (while you can always find plenty of bears and chimeras).

That being said, it will take 87 trips total to reach Exalted status (if you do not include Rampaging Giants). I am doing this as a level 61 Frost Mage and don't think I can kill the giants solo, although I haven't tried since a few levels ago. Let's assume you're a little quicker than me and can do the provision run in 10 minutes or the combo run in 20 minutes. Doing the math, you will spend:

14.5 HOURS OF YOUR LIFE just to get a cool looking mount that doesn't even run slightly faster. We are truly geeks.

So after reading that this quest becomes available at 1500/3000, I decided to check out what my rep was at with them. I hit exalted with the Timbermaw about 2 weeks ago and am currently sitting at 550/3000 (still Neutral) with the Wintersabers and this quest is now available to me. You DO NOT have to be 1500/3000, just exalted with Timbermaw to open the quest.

These are my timings for this quest and the provisions quest:

From inn in Wintergrasp, via Winterfall village and then pick up the meat: 10 minutes.
This can be done once every 30 minutes via HS.

Full round, both quests, stone to stone: 15 minutes (2k rep/hour)

Doing just the provisions quest: 7-8 minutes so about the same rep per hour as a full round, but without bonus rep for Timbermaw hold.

This is a level 80 titans grip warrior, so I have to get close to the mob but oneshot everything.

One timesaver I use is that I am an engineer so I jump off the cliff and parachute down to land on the other side of the glade, shave off probably 10-15 seconds and with all these runs, that will amount to something.

Theoretical timings:
HS to Everlook - 1st run 10 minutes 500 rep
Make a full run - 500 rep 15 minutes
Do only provisions - 250 rep 8 minutes
repeat
This way you get 1250 rep every 33 minutes (about 2250 rep/hr) and can sell and mail off stuff.

HS to everlook - 10 min 500 rep
2 full runs: 1000 rep 30 minutes
repeat
That is 1500 rep in 40 minutes or 2250 rep per hour.

Basically, keep doing full runs especially if you need the Timbermaw hold rep.

This is much easier now as of 4.0.3a

Every mob in the village is either a Shaman or an Ursa, and there are a few more mob spawns about too.

If you didn't know, there are additional mobs on the snowy hills behind the village. If you are alone in the village they should help you finish the quest without waiting for respawns

This quest seems to be gone as of May 2012 - I'm doing the wintersaber mount daily without ever seeing this quest offered. Maybe it should be marked obsolete?
