How to become an Armorsmith:
When you have your Blacksmith skills up to a certain value, ""expert"" I think, when you talk to the BS trainer in IF choices will pop up that say- tell me more about ""weaponsmith"" or ""armorsmith"".

For Armorsmith you:
1. Declare Armorsmith
2. You will be directed to the other Dwarf by the forge about the specifics of being an Armorsmith. He gives you a quest requiring that you make 7 items: 4 ornate mithril helmets, 2 ornate mithril boots, 1 ornate mithril breast plate. But guess what? This quest is the tip of the iceberg. You don't have the recipes for these items, they are not on the BS training list, and he does not tell you where to go or who to talk to!
3. You talk to Hank the Hammer in Stormwind and complete his quest, which will open up the quest to talk to the guy in BB (by the forge outside) part of the Mithril order.
4. Talk to guy in BB who then directs you to talk to a Dwarf out in the wilderness of STV. (north of the ogre mound)
5. Gavan (in the wilderness) will have 3 quests, to get a certain amount of mithril bars, iron bars, citrine, etc. Each quest you complete gives you a recipe.
6. He will then direct you to his student (by the forge inside) studying in Gadgetzan.
7. This student will have 3 more quests, that give you more recipes. After each quest you get more recipes. At this point you are still missing the ornate mithril helmet recipe.
8. So you go to Gadgetzan, in Tanaris and talk to the Night Elf at the Forge in town. He has 3 quests which get you more recipes. One of those is the ornate mithril helmet.
9. After all of this you'll have all the recipes you need to complete the original quest: The Art of Armorsmith.
10. Now it's JUST a matter of working your tail off collecting more raw material to make the 7 items. When all is said and done you get approx 3900 XP for the original quest- The Art of Armorsmith, and a pat on the back, besides having some top notch armor. The the potential to make more.

Total mats for the entire quest line:

286 Mithril Bars
70 Iron Bars
25 Truesilver Bars
30 Coal
36 Heavy Stone
36 Solid Stone
18 Mageweave Cloth
14 Thick Leather
4 Citrine
2 Aquamarine
1 Heart of Fire

I strongly reccommend you either get friends and guildmates to help contribute mats or buying some Mithril off the auction house; otherwise you'll be on this questline forever. Aside from forging legendaries, this is probably one the most expensive questlines in mat costs in the entire game - and to be perfectly honest, it's largely not worth it without getting some good world-drop patterns unless your guild is going to funnel you the mats to get reputation so you can craft resist armor for them.

Is it possible to just buy the Ornate Mithril stuff from someone who can make it? The pieces are usually up on the AH for fairly cheap.

One thing that's not mentioned is that Hank the Hand won't talk to you unless you have 210 Blacksmithing, that caused a lot of confusion, especially considering the Armorsmithing quest is available at 200.

In response to learning Armorsmith.
You dont need to select Armorsmith to learn Ornate Mithril plans.
The Armorsmith quest is just a quest to create some armor Items to ""Prove your skill."" He asks you right in it... ""You do know how to create Ornate Mithril, dont you?""

The other quests - One you get from Hank the Hammer or Ox are for ""The Mithril Order"" which is where you learn the Ornate Mithril stuff. Not to mention you get a pretty sweet smithing hammer!

If you do the other quests (The Mithril order - Hank in SW or Ox in Org) you can learn Ornate Mithril and not even need to do the Armorsmithing quest. Also I think they are lower than the Armorsmith quest (Level and skill req) that you could do it before and not need to do it in one straight shot.

I have spoken to the armorsmith next to the great forge in Ironforge and trained two of his items. He has never given me any quest and I have completed the blacksmithing quests for the guy in Gadgetzan. My blacksmithing is at 260. All that I want to know is why hasn't the armorsmith in IF given me the quest that I need to become and armorsmith.

By mmilliken on 01/30/2009 (Patch 3.0.8)
I suggest you grab this quest as soon as you are able. I waited till I needed to be an armorsmith or weaponsmith at skill level 260. At 260 most of the items you make are grey and you get no skill for them. All the quests were grey as well, but of course that depends on your level when you get the quest, not your blacksmith skill.

For the first quest from Hank you will need 30 Iron Bars and 12 grinding stones for the 6 Golden scale bracers.

https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2758 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2758 after which you will be given an insignia to be taken to Booty Bay. That quest is:

https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2759 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2759 Galvan is east of the road in the norther part of Stranglethorn Vale. He is closer to te hrebel Camp flight point than Booty Bay, but of course you have to had in the quest above in Booty Bay first.

There is an upside to waiting. I have plenty of money so I bought most of the 120 bars of Mithril Galvan wants for his three quests. I already had the truesilver bars, 4 Citrines and 40 iron bars on hand. Note Galvan's first quest is 40 Mithril, 40 Iron bars. His second is 40 Mithril bars and 5 Truesilver bars and his third quest is 40 Mithril Bars and 4 Citrine.

https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2762 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2762
https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2763 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2763

At the end of which you will be sent to Tanaris on quest

https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2764 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2764

Where 3 more quests await from Trenton Lighthammer. He is at the forge in Gadgetzan.

https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2772 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2772
https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2771 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2771
https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2773 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2773
https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=3321 https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=3321

During which you will need:

Mithril Coif x2
Ornate Mithril Shoulder
Heavy Mithril Breastplate x2
Ornate Mithril Gloves
Heavy Mithril Boots x2
Ornate Mithril Pants

Material for these quests are:

Mithril Bar x110
Truesilver Bar x 3
Mageweave Cloth x 18
Thick Leather x 14
Solid Grinding Stone x 3

And of course you are nowhere near an alliance auction house. Plan ahead to bring enough materials if you are making the items. After this you go back to your home city and build the items for the original quest.

To get full XP from this quest, finish it before hitting lvl 49.

The 'master'-quest was green when I got it.

Dunno why, but the subsequent 'sub-quests' where yellow when I got them?

Upon completion of this quest you gain 4350 exp; not 1250. This is not to discredit the experience you gain from all the other quests. Don't do this quest unless you're ready to dedicate a lot of time farming mats, you're around level 60, and your blacksmithing skill is around level 240. It is possible to do it at lower levels, but very difficult. I was able to achieve it at level 42, but I started the process when I was only level 39. It took me about 4 days of 4-5 hours of work to get it done and a bunch of help from my guild mates. Again don't do this unless you have time to dedicate to it. Happy Smithing!
