Fine Moonstalker Pelt (5)

Description

<name>, your skills have already helped me in my endeavor. Could I impose on you again to help Grimclaw and his master Volcor? In addition, I can craft you a magical cloak that will allow you to walk unhindered by Darkshore's creatures while you look for him.

To create the cloak, I'll need five fine moonstalker pelts from a moonstalker sire or matriarch to have enough material. The cats can be found near Wildbend River to the south, or even farther south near Ashenvale.

Progress

I can't in good conscience permit you to seek Volcor until I've crafted that cloak for you.

Completion

These will do nicely, <name>. I shall set to work on the cloak immediately.

Give me a few moments, then return to me.

Oh, one more thing: after you've used the enchantment on the cloak you'll be limited in your interactions with others. If you can help it, do no more than speak to others. Much more than that could dispel the illusion.

Gains

Upon completion of quests, get:
  • 155 experience (9 30 at max. level)
  • 250 Reputation with Darnassus

Head on down to the deep south of Darkshore, and you'll find plenty of Moonstalker Sires and Matriarchs. Be ready for the runts the Matriarchs tag-team you with.

I just completed getting the pelts, and the drop rate was 4/9 from the Moonstalker Sires and 1/4 from the Moonstalker Matriarchs. The biggest problem I had was the slow respawn rate and trying to track them down before other players got to them when they respawned.

So, basically, I had a 45% drop rate from the sires and a 25% drop rate from the matriarchs. Between the two it was 5/13 or roughly 38% drop rate which isn't all that bad.

60% from Matriachs 3/5
40% from Sires 2/5

took about 40 minutes, sparse spawn.
just stay around the south near border of ashenvale where you can also pick up a rare spawn strider.

If you ever decide to finish the quest i suggest that you kill moonstakler sires. It may be a long walk south of darkshore, but it's worth it! (it only took me 9 kills to finish the quest =P)

There are a lot more Moonstalker Sires and Matriarchs at the far northern edge of the zone, past Mathystra. If you have this quest when you are doing any of the Mathystra Relics, Tower of Althalaxx, or Gyromast quests, then doing the moonstalkers up north is very close by and rarely in competition with other players. (In doing this quest on several alts, I've never ever seen someone else up there.)

I have tried this quest twice at the Southern area....it is terrible down there. Go North up to 60, 9 and have a much easier time. 5 Pelts in 6 kills. Time was under 5 minutes from first kill to last kill. There is also several Copper nodes to mine and you can do any of the northern quests mentioned by the above poster.

I found this quest to be a total pain in the butt in the south so I went up north to do it. I found a great area at [59.8, 11.4] there are so many of the buggers there you have to try hard not to get adds. Also pick up the https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=951 Mathystra Relics quest as you can pick up the items right around this same area.
Also the Moonstalker Sires seem to drop the item more then the Matriarchs (for me anyway), I got 3/5 of the pelts from the Sires. The Sires also seem to be lower in level on average then the Matriarchs.
For the Matriarchs I found a good tactic as a level 20 druid (non-twink, thus crap gear) was to use hibernate on the Matriarchs (normally around level 20) and switch to cat form and take out the runt (normally around level 17) I could make quick work of the runt by itself and still have time left to let my energy refill before the Matriarch woke up and came after me.
Once again watch out for adds at that location, they walk around very close together.

This quest can be a menace. Here are a few tips:
This quest has an unpredictable drop rate. Typically a bad one.
https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=2237 Moonstalker Sires and https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=2071 Moonstalker Matriarch drop the pelts. It is easier to kill the Sires because they do not have adds.
The Sires and Matriarchs can be found at 60,12 and 38, 80.
If you do this quest at 60,12, pair it with https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=951 Mathystra Relics, https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2098 Gyromast's Retrieval, https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=2078 Gyromast's Revenge, Tower of Althalaxx (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=965 Part 1) and (https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=966 Part 2).
If you do this quest at 38,80, pair it with https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=1003 Buzzbox 525, https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=948 Onu (and subsequent quests), and https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=729 The Absent-Minded Prospector (as well as subsequent quests).
Also, if you're lucky and do this quest at 38,80 you may run into the rare spawn https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=2172 Strider Clutchmother.

Also note:
This quest requires level eleven and potentially the completion of https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=984 How Big A Threat?
This quest is available to all Alliance races: Draenei, Night Elf, Human, and Gnome all can acquire it.

Some great posts on this topic.

Want to Confirm that there are a high number of the Sires and Matriarchs in the very far north of Darkshore about (60,9) coords wise.

Confirmed that the drop rate appears to be exceptionally higher on these mobs. However, as with most things in WoW, there are lucky streaks and unlucky streaks. I can confirm, however, that having done this quest 4 other times, always in the south of Darkshire I always had the 2 hours 3 pelts drop rate described (on a 79 Mage, 69 Rogue, 19 druid, and 23 War). I almost didn't do this quest because of the drop rate in the past. Read up and tried the North.

The Northern spot took roughly 3 minutes as a 73 Sham.

I tried to do this quest just as it said in the instructions, by going north. But as a lvl 15 rogue, I just couldn't make it past the nagas. So I headed south, as I had some other quests to do there, and tried my luck on the Sires there. Well, I guess I got very lucky, cause the drop rate was very high: 5 out of 6; that would mean 83%. So I guess it's worth a try, especially because there are lots of Sires down south.

GO TO THE MOONSTALKERS NORTH OF MATHYSTRA!

I can't stress this enough. On the little piece of land North of the naga there is a ton of Moonstalker Sires and Matriarchs. It's a nice, easy place to farm them as they're pretty well spaced out and there is no other aggressive creatures in the area. I found the drop rate to be infinitely better than anywhere else in Darkshore. Got all my pelts in less than 5 minutes.

Yes, that's when https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=3695 Grimclaw run in. And since https://vanillawowdb.com/?npc=3693 Terenthis speaks bear he has a conversation with him. I don't speak bear so I only got one part of it.<div class=""quote"">Terenthis says: What was that noise? It sounded like a roar.
Grimclaw roars at Terenthis to get his attention.
Terenthis says: Grimclaw? Easy there, my friend... where is your master Volcor?
Grimclaw begins to moan and roar at Terenthis while stomping his paws on the ground.
Terenthis says: Whoa, whoa there, my friend. One moment...
Terenthis begins to cast a spell on Grimclaw.
Terenthis says: There... that should help. Now, tell me what's happened, Grimclaw.
Grimclaw roars at Terenthis more, but this time the druid seems to understand the bear.
Terenthis says: I understand, my friend. I shall find someone to help your master. Go back to him now, or at least stay close.
Grimclaw roars in acknowledgement at Terenthis.
Terenthis says: If you have the time, Grimclaw and his master Volcor could use your help. If you're interested, speak with me further...

As of the current patch (noted above) the first https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=984 How Big a Threat? quest is no longer the only prerequisite for this quest.
You must also complete the second https://vanillawowdb.com/?quest=985 How Big a Threat? quest, at least I had to on my lvl 21 Night Elf Druid.

EDIT: Also, grinding the SOUTH Moonstalker Sires, I got my 5 pelts in 7 kills. Also conviniently interspersed with Grizzled Thistle Bears for https://vanillawowdb.com/?object=17185 Buzzbox 525
