I just completed this quest , and when I checked my skills I saw that my riding skill had been increased from 75 to 150! So by doing the quest line you actually save about 800 g because of the very high training price.

Do you have to buy all of the summoning reagents yourself, or can I bring another Warlock that have done the quest to summon it and then kill it?

Doing this quest with a second warlock is very nice even if you don't need their Bell, Wheel, and Candle.

DM West is rather easy for Warlocks due to their banish spell. Having 2 'locks makes taking down the pylons very easy.

Having 2 'locks around for enslave demon during the Xorothian Dreadsteed event is sometimes the edge you need to succeed. Since the elite demons spawn at a certain rate during the event, it is possible to fall behind and then it becomes very diffictult to finish. With a second 'lock handy it's no trouble to have 2 elite demons controlled and fighting one (or two if you're really behind in dps) elite demon(s).

Plus two 'locks handing out healthstones and using soulstones makes for a fast rebound from a bad situation or wipe.

Good luck.

Make sure to bring plenty of shards with you if you are the one keeping the bell wheel and candle up, each time you use the black loadstone it consumes a shard. Whenever I have done this quest it has generally taken between 10 and 15 shards

Also having two warlocks in the party for this quest makes it so much easier. each can enslave a felguard and use it to fight off imps and other felguards. the extra AOE is a huge plus as well.Hang on to your mats after completing the quest because they can be reused to help another warlock complete the quest.

By Athryl on 07/11/2006 (Patch 1.12.0)
First priority should be keeping the bell, candle, and wheel up because if their auras are active the entire fight becomes quite easy due to the healing and damage reduction.

If you happen to bring 2 warlocks as others have said only one has to buy the summoning items. However, keep in mind that if the other warlock just buys the black lodestone they can help to keep the bell, candle, and wheel active. It isn't necessary but it can be helpful because when a warlock has any sort of aggro it will interrupt them from reactivating the items, not to mention sharing the shard costs is a big plus.

I'm not 100%, but when I finished this our party didn't outlast the waves of demons. We wiped. There were mobs still left in the circle. In desperation, the priest and pally (both soulstoned) resurrected to fight but when they did so the mobs despawned. The ritual _either_ finishes on itself despite dying or we were so close we just wiped as it ended. We then continued the ritual and killed the dreadsteed and master.

My point? Don't give up if you wipe. If you've got a soulstone up (which you should) and you wipe, wait it out for a few minutes and then pop up.

I didn't find this to be as easy as many other comments made it out to be. You can't waltz through Dire Maul even post-expansion.

I've done that quest a lot of times now. I bought the mats, you need, if you want to be able to summon the steed and his master, and since that, other warlocks are asking me to summon the steed for them for a lower price ofcourse.

I wouldn't say this are an easy quest, but with the right people in your party it becomes a bit easier. I've been trying some combinations of people in the party and I would say that with a druid/priest, 2 warlocks (to enslave the eleite demons that spawns during the event), a mage (who can aoe the imps, to keep them of the warlock who's restarting the bell, wheel and candle) and a warrior, this quest are easy and a wipe should be able to avoid.

Since nobody has mentioned, I'll just say that the steed makes an awesome knockback, so try to stand with your back to a wall. If posible have one of the enslaved demons to tank the steed, since they can't be knockbacked.

If you don't have a lot of friends or a decent guild on your server that are willing to help just save yourself some time and frustration and buy your epic mount training and either pvp for the epic mount or just buy it. What you save in frustration is much more than 100-200g difference you save by doing the quest. I really wish Blizzard would update these so that they become Ramparts/Blood Furnace quests so that people will actually run them.

Heres a small tip if things go wrong and u have a rogue in the group. If ppl start to wipe, have the rogue vanish and stay in the circle (not sure if he has to stay in it, but alive at least), he'll be stealthed but the event will keep going and eventually the circle will be complete, after which ur soulstoned healer can rez himself and everyone else, or u can just release and run back (not sure if the latter works since my group had a priest).

All in all, if things go wrong, a rogue can vanish and the event will finish itself.

This quest isn't as bad as people say it is. It is hella long that's for sure, but the dreadsteed is awesome! I just got it about a week ago and spending all the money for it is definayley worth it. It costs about 550g anyway to get the training and even though I had to buy the mats myself i only spend about 400g. So i did save some. Some can finish this quest really fast, but if u spam for the mats like the dragon scales, etc. u can complete this quest in just a few hours. The worst part is really Scholo and Dire. They take the longest. But otherwise I really enjoyed this quest. Yes...it's extremily long, but it gets kinda fun after awhile, until ur !@#$ed off that it's taking so long and u just want ur mount. Anyway I have my mount now and it was sure worth all those long hours. For sure try to get some friends to help b/c that saves a bit of time. HAVE FUN!

For people talking about scholomance: This is the quest AFTER completing the scholomance section and many if not most people come here for tips/help for the DIRE MAUL part.

To do this quest, you have to kill the elementals surrounding each of the five pylons. Why? Because there's a forcefield around the area where you'll have to summon the dreadstead. To remove the forcefield, you have to power down the five pylons in the instance. All of the elementals around the pylon have to die in order for the pylon to power down. When the last one dies, you heard a shattering sound and you'll see the pylon 'explode' and it won't glow bright bluish-white anymore. (It'll be an ugly white afterwards). The elementals surrounding the pylons are immune to arcane magic. They also hit rather hard so it's best if you don't take all of them down at a time. It's possible to pull 1-2 from the pylon without aggroing the others. They're also CC-able.

When you go into the instance, you'll see a pylon right away. Be careful to not aggro the trees on both sides of the pylon, and watch out for the walking giant trees (But if you're going to kill the big tree boss, Tendris Warpwood, you should just kill the giant trees walking around. Tendris Warpwood will call them all to defend him if you engage in a fight with him.)

Then, walk upstairs to where the undead are (the place is relatively small, I'll assume you can see the upstairs are from the first pylon). There, they'll be two pylons, one on the left side, one on the right. Either way you go (it's like a rectangle shape, [~ == ~] the middle is a hole you cannot 'float' over and the pylons are marked here with a ~. Illyanna Ravenoak (boss) and her bear are walking around one side of the rectangle (the side away from the entrance) so you migth want to kill that side), you'll have to kill a mob of non-elite skeletons. Be careful! Once these skeletons are dead, they'll spawn five non-elite worms to attack whoever had the killing blow on the original skeleton. They have very little health, but should be taken down a.s.a.p. as five worms hitting one person for ~50hp per hit will kill anyone pretty quickly.
Also, don't split up! There are invisible monsters that appear once in a while and if your healer (or someone) gets ahead of the rest of the party, they'll probably die if no one's there to defend them.

Ok! After getting those two upstairs, go back down to where Tendris Warpwood is. He's a giant tree down the stairs of the first (entrace) level. You can't miss him. If you cant find him... (I don't know what to say..) At lvl 60, I was able to walk down the stairs, hugging the right side, and was able to get to the door to his right (You need the Crescant key to unlock it) without aggroing the boss.
So! open the door, and go through (watch out! There's two invisible.. uh.. thingys here). You should find yourself in a circular room with what looks like wind elementals and mana elementals. There's also Immol'thar and some person (hm.. I wonder who that person is..;D) inside a forcefield.
There's a pylons on both sides of the room. Power those down. :]ou should only have to kill a few wind elementals to get to them.

After that's done, Immol'thar is right there with no force field! You'll see more elementals walking around in a circle around the boss area. You might want to kill them to avoid dragging them into the boss fight, but it's not required.

Kill Immol'thar and there you'll have the circle all to yourself! Well, not for long anyway.
The imp is called and he sets up the bell, candle, and wheel around the circle. Now, imps and felguards come and attack the three items. (They have a buff that does ~200-300 to one of the item). The imps are nonelites, but the felguards are elites. As time moves on, more and more people will come.

The warlock must keep the three items up. To do that, they can have their party take on the adds while they themselves use soul shards to keep the items up.

After a few minutes (I think it was between 6-9..) the adds will go away, and the dreadstead can be summoned.
Kill the dreadsteed, loot the corspe, talk to the spirit and quest complete!
Uh.. uh oh! When the horse dies, his master comes and attacks the party! D: You don't have to kill him to complete the quest.

I went in (as a 70 hunter) with a 60 lock and we managed to finish this quest.
the lock both died 4-5 minutes into the summoning part and I walked out and feigned death because my pet died and there were 4 fel guards and around 20 imps in the circle. I sat on the stairs, rezed and feed my pet, healed up, and within a minute (or two), everything despawned. The lock used her soulstone and summoned the horse. mm.. I was surprised... and very happy we didn't have to do the whole thing again.

Good luck! (And sorry for typos)

HINT to save you the 200g for this part of the quest chain, If you go to DM-W in a group with another Lock who already has the items the instructions say you need you do not need them. You will be able to get your dreadstead with the other Lock's stuff. AKA you only need to do it once. I learned this the hard way. Lost 200g since i cant sell the stuff back. if this happens to you i suggest that you find another lock that is on his way to get his dreadstead and run him through to use your items. [maybe give him a discount if you want some of your gold back?]

Duo'd easy as pie post 3.02. Of course I didn't have the mats to do the event pre-3.02 so I've only got the above comments to go by.

Myself: 63 Full affliction warlock with felhunter summoned
Partner was a 70 BM hunter (highest AP on our realm .. Fuskami ..11/2/08 http://gankbang.com/stats.php?wc=hunter&s=attackpower&realm=Earthen+Ring&... Gankbang)

He had a pet gorilla for the aoe tanking and the two of them focused on dps. Myself strictly focusing on healing the candle, wheel and bell I only dps'd on occasion by dropping rain of fire or popping a siphon life on a mob now and then. Otherwise to drop aggro I'd just stand by his pet.

Took about 7-8 minutes total but required very little pressure on either of our parts. Once the demons finished popping I spawned the steed and we focus fired him down. Had the quest complete before the add was even below 60% HP.

Good luck

Fortunately (or perhaps sadly, depending on your point of view) all of the above is now no longer necessary. Summon Dreadsteed is now a trainable spell from any warlock trainer for 17g as of 3.0.2. The only ""sacrifice"" is that you have to wait until level 61 to train it, as opposed to getting it at 60. Guess Blizz figures that if it's hard for a lock to find anyone to take him through Scholo and DMW in the BC era, it's REALLY going to be hard to do so in WotLK, not to mention that there are going to be even neater mounts to get, so may as well give the locks the dreadsteed. New locks may appreciate not having to spend all the time required for this chain, while those who got theirs pre-WotLK may be ticked off (and with justification) but they'll get over it.

EDIT: You will have to pay to learn level 60 riding the same as everyone else, but the cost is now around 500 gold with discounts, so it is only slighly more than what you would be paying by doing this quest chain. Any extra amount is easily made up for by the time and travel savings.

Patch 3.0.2 (10/14/08): Mana cost removed, global cooldown removed.

I ran through this quest line this weekend, duoed my 66 Druid with a 66 Warlock -- this was a great, fun quest line (and it was a decent challenge for us) and the having the mount to show off is a cool reward. I honestly have to say I'm a little disappointed the Dreadsteed is now trainable by without the quest.

That said, if you're primarily interested in min/maxing your play time to experience & gold income, you're probably best off just dumping gold on the riding trainer and buying the mount. Even if you don't spend the 250g worth of ""reusable"" items, you do end up spending a lot of travel time, dungeon time, and time & money at the auction house getting the crafting mats needed (we had to actually farm for ghost mushrooms to make the shadow power pots.)

Rest assured, said warlock will be roped in to helping me quest for my epic flight form when we hit 78...

3x black dragonscale = 1-2 weeks at the AH and nobody sold it...
payed 100g for someone to come skin them for me...I personally think that's a tad expensive. I asked a guild member to come and help out who wanted to level their skinning. The mobs that drop black dragonscale are all over the zone and if you combine that with the dark iron ore (quite a few serious players take two gathering skills at once with one that can be tracked) you effectively kill 3 birds with one stone.<div class=""quote"">6x large brilliant shard = approximately 100gThis is probably the easiest part! Running BRD in a group with an enchanter - see we've still not left the area - will result in enough goodies for them to disenchant. Make a deal that they can keep them and just to give you the shards. There are also mining opportunities in the instance to continue to gather the dark iron ore<div class=""quote"">1 arcanite bar = approximately 50gIf something is too expensive on the AH I would assume the alternative is to attempt to gather mats and ask for someone to make it - I can only speak for my server but at the weekends its packed full and not all those players have maxed out skills in whatever proffesions they have chosen. Good chance you'll find someone to make something and be happy for the skill up and a fair tip<div class=""quote"">Jeeve's Jar = 150g

black lodestone = 50g

xorothian glyphs = 50gAsk any 60+ warlock from the second you start the quest if they have gone through the quest chain themselves and if they have any tips for you or can spare time to assist. If a lock has done this quest I can bet they'd love to help out others. I also think the quest chain gives you opportunites to broaden your friends list as you interact with them and they help you. And they'll have the jar, stone and glyph to save more gold. I'd advise buying a second stone so you have more than one lock maintaining the ritual - less chance of a fail there.

The chain can take time and I decided the easiest, most cost effective way was to go though it over a period of time and get help where I could. If I had to wait 4 days for the guildie to come help skin then so be it, I'm patient.

There is a massive sense of achievement when this is complete and you have your steed. Its great that its purchaseable from a trainer for those that want to focus on the end game and level ASAP but WoW is chock full of things that you'll miss if you don't take time out to examine, explore, understand and appreciate and this quest chain is a prime example.

Having just completed this request, I wanted to leave a few pointers which other warlocks might find helpful. I won't focus on the pre-requisite quests as plenty of others have covered them. I did this as a level 70 and I solo'd all the item collection quests. I had help in Dire Maul from a level 80 warrior.

After accepting the quest, you need to head over to Dire Maul - this wasn't entirely obvious when you weren't sure where the Circle of Greater Summoning is. Before you even bother heading over, YOU MUST HAVE at least 9 soulshards. At level 70, you will not be able to get more whilst in the dungeon. As I found out. Two runs of DM here.

There are nine purple marks on the circle in Dire Maul during the summoning and each one lights up as you reset the Bell, Candle or Wheel - this will make sense in a moment. Head to Dire Maul, you'll need to disable the 5 blue crystals to unlock the prison (this is possibly covered by Dire Maul comments). Once you are in the prison and the first boss has been killed (easy to solo as a level 70), open the J'eevee jar and let him out. He'll setup the Bell, Candle and Wheel and then disappear. You'll have a few moments before the mobs appear. The warlock who is summoning is completely protected so long as the the Bell, Candle and Wheel are 'alive'. I just run in big circles hovering over each piece to see if they needed to be reset. There will be at least 9 failures - and therefore 9 soulshards. You will need some friends to fight the mobs - and there are a lot of them. Mostly elite level 60s. They will swarm several times over the course of the summoning, which lasts about 5 minutes.

Once the summoning is complete, the Dreadsteed will appear, kill him (easy again at 70 - he's only a level 62 elite) and the second boss appears. Smack him up (again fairly easy at 70 even to solo) and you can then select the spirit of the Dreadsteed (getting the spell) and loot the corpse of his (ex)keeper!

Best of luck.

Having invested that cash, I waited until I was level 77 when I then soloed Dire Maul to clear the area ready to start the ritual, had a lvl80 priest from the guild came to help - really just to allow me to keep the Bell, Candle and Wheel up without interrupts. It goes on for a time, but never any real problems. I dont think you could ever solo this - but I could be wrong.

I think the Acheivement is worth having - I agree there should be a title or some distinction between earning the mount and just throwing cash at the problem.

 • and earning the 'feat of strength' achievement.
Time was this was the only means of earning the class-specific mount, and there are many similar legacy quests left in. Since it does no harm to keep the quest in, I would ask, ""why would Blizzard remove it?"" :)

Remember that if you bring along another warlock that already has the 3 items for the final summoning, it would be wise to at least spend 50g for the lodestone as with it you can recharge the 3 nodes if they start to fail, just so you wont be feeding on his shard reserve. Or in the mayhem you fail to see that they go down and need to restart the whole ritual.<div class=""quote"">Why do it? Take your pick from:
 • 'for the sheer fun of it',
 • exploring the lore behind your class,
 • and earning the 'feat of strength' achievement.

I use Lightheaded in game and didn't expect Wowhead posters to recommend to me to read some other site for information I should be able to get here, so here goes. I'm not interested in the prequest chain--you should have already read about that to get to this point.

You basically need to purchase the 3 items from the Goblin in Burning Steppes and come to Dire Maul WEST. You'll need the Crescent Key (no, killing yourself by the entrance door using Hellfire WILL NOT WORK because there is an inner door too). Get it from Pusillin in Dire Maul East if you don't have it--it really takes like 5 minutes. Once inside DM West, you will need to kill groups of maybe eight voidwalker-looking mobs surrounding five pylons to free the boss from a forcefield so you can gain access to the summoning circle for the summons. The five Pylons are located:

1. On grassy rectangle, just inside the instance's front door.

2. Straight past that, on the right hand side of a downward ramp to a huge tree boss, you will see an arched doorway with ghosts and a ramp leading upwards behind them. No pull--just head up that ramp past the ghosts and you be on a balcony with some skeleton and humanoid/undead caster mobs. You will find Pylons 2 and 3 on either side of the balcony looking down on the big tree boss. (There is a questgiver for the Shen'dralar right there so you can pick that up too since 1/2 bosses you need to kill for that quest is getting done for the Dreadsteed quest. For the rep, since it's hard to come by.)

3. Go back to the ramp leading down to tree guy, no pull. There is a wooden arched door on the right which requires the Crescent Key. Go on down a hallway and kill the last set of two mobs surrounding Pylons 4 and 5.

Now you've unlocked the forcefield around Immo'thar. He's a tank and spank (I'm 80, gs 4.1K and I used my Felguard). Get rid of him. Then pop out your imp in a jar. He'll place a cute bell, a wheel, and a candle out for you so you can do the quest. (Sadly he put the wheel inside the corpse of Immo'thar so I couldn't see it that well). Then he goes back in the jar--it's not consumed if you fail.

What happens next is that a bunch of imps will spawn, then the Felguards will start spawning. Using my Felguard I tried to keep aggro off me and use Rain of Fire. Even at 80 I ran out of mana quickly and had to Life Tap to dangerous levels. Bring bandages. You might not have understood why you need Soul Shards here, but the reason why is sometimes the bell, the wheel and maybe the candle will need to be recharged. If so, you will know by mousing over the item... and if a wheel/cog thingy appears, that item's toast and needs to get recharged. Recharging them doesn't require you to hotkey anything to your toolbar--as long as you have a soulshard, the item will recharge after a lengthy cast bar. Unfortunately, there will be annoying interrupts from even an imp's melee requiring you to cast recharge over again.

If you fail to recharge these item, no more mobs will appear. And you have to release imp in a jar once again.

After a while you will read a red Raid warning indicating that the scroll can be used. Click the scroll and summon your angry Dreadsteed. After a short while, the rider will appear, grumpy, and you'll have to kill him too. Once you kill both, you will click the corpse of the Dreadsteed for your quest turn in. He will give to you a cloth mantle and a Summon (and a Feat of Strength!) Believe me, these 2 are way easier than the constant stream of imps and Felguards. Now I have to figure out what to do with my imp jar, my stones and my scroll because they're still in my bag.

This quest sadly is no longer available as of patch 4.0, along withall old Class-specific quests. http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=27401640597&sid=1&pageNo=1 http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=27401640597&sid=1&pageNo=1 Even if you were currently on the quest when it was removed, it cannot be completed, as the Bell the Candle and the Wheel all require the physical Soul Shards to recharge them with Black Lodestone which have also been removed with the patch.

I tried the encounter with my guild anyways at level 60 to see if the new UI Soul Shards would still work, but they do not and the items will fail before the Summoning Circle can be completed since the event is on a timer much like the Pyramid encounter in Zul'Farrak.

Removed in Cataclysm, sadly.
I had done most of the quest and it was in my quest log, but was gone when I updated to 4.0.1 pre-patch.

By searching YouTube, you can still find old videos of the quest, at least :)
And private servers probably, but remember those are very frowned upon by Blizz.

""Azeroth is on the eve of a dramatic transformation, and as World of Warcraft changes, sometimes the old must go to make way for the new. Since the world elements that support them will be gone, many aging quests will exist only in the mists of the past.

In particular, there's been some confusion regarding lower-level class specific quests that can no longer be completed. Never fear: class mounts and abilities remain available via class trainers, even though the quests associated with them are no longer available. Also, there are several low and mid-level weapons, trinkets and robes that were once awarded via class specific quests which are no longer available and their associated quests have been removed.

We are looking forward to offering new quests, quest lines and rewards as players level through World of Warcraft: Cataclysm instead. For example, we plan a level 20 dungeon based quest which will offer weapon rewards appropriate to all classes. There will also be a similar level 50 dungeon quest which has a headpiece reward.""
Dreadsteed questline is gone. Feats Of Strenght too.

The quest was indeed removed but if you want one of the boss drops for transmo (ie: unique gun model: https://vanillawowdb.com/?item=18755"">(Item #18755) ) you can ask a Warlock who already did his quest and still have the items for the ritual to summon the boss.

The ritual is quite long but nothing hard...and it seems Blizzard fixed the Soul shard thing since the Warlock I did it with managed to spawn the Steed and then of course the boss :)

TL;DR = This boss is still available to summon if you have a Warlock with the items for the ritual wishing to help :)
